I strongly advise researching alternative facilities before placing a loved one in this care center. My experience with the Arcadia Unit has revealed severe deficiencies in sanitation, basic patient care, and communication.Sanitation and Facility Upkeep: The unit is poorly maintained. There is a pungent urine odor immediately upon entry, and both the floors and baseboards are visibly filthy.Neglect of Personal Hygiene: Although residents are scheduled for showers on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the staff cannot verify whether my mother actually receives them. During a week when her clothes were misplaced, she was left in the same outfit for seven straight days. When I cut her toenails, her feet had a severe, sour odor, confirming a total lack of basic bathing.Substandard Nutrition: The food provided is unappealing and poorly prepared. During a recent dinner visit, my mother was served a cold, hard sausage, mushy vegetables, melted ice cream, and lukewarm milk. Due to the poor quality, she frequently refuses to eat.Emotional Distress and Lack of Stimulation: Residents are rarely taken outdoors. If I do not personally visit to take my mother outside for fresh air, she remains confined indoors for over a month at a time. Despite having dementia, she is cognitively equipped to communicate her distress. She is deeply unhappy, cries frequently, and has recently become increasingly irritated, sad, and desperate to leave.Communication Failures: The facility is highly unresponsive. Phone calls to the unit regularly go unanswered. There is an absolute lack of internal communication between shifts; the evening staff is entirely unaware of morning events, and the morning staff is unavailable to answer questions later in the day. Please spare me the follow-up call, as I've spoken to the facility administrator and floor staff, ie..social worker, and I have not gotten any response.

My love one was transferred from the Autumn. Lake Healthcare at Patuexant, which was a far better place than it's sister facility Autumn Lake at Chevy Chase. My love one has been placed on their Arcadia Unit. A locked unit, here at Autumn Lake Chevy Chase, which resembles a Psyche Unit at one of the worst hospitals imaginable. The carpets are stained throughout the unit. The aroma of urine is strong and the accomodations are old and outdated. The furniture is old and in need of repair or replacement. The residents have a common room, where they have their meals and watch television. The sleeping quarters are tight and impersonal. 4 persons to one toilet and share one sink. They do not have televisions in their rooms, to watch after being tucked in at night or even throughout the day. I was with my love one tonight, and I notice knats flying around in his room, and no open food was found. I did see soiled linen on his bed, maybe that contributed to tge unwanted flying guest. I hope that he does not have bed bugs, because I saw what look like scratches on his hands and now I am itching. I have also noticed a mental decline since he has been here. I believe that God is going to answer my prayers, that the owner will honor the residents, and treat them with respect and with the dignity they deserve. This place is not fit to care for any living being in. The Animal shelter care for the pets, better than these residents are respected. Come take a tour and you will find the disgusting atmosphere and environment my love one and the othe guest have to endure. Lord God place each one of them in well kept, well cared for, dignified and respectful living arrangements. Shame on you, Autumn Lake at Chevy Chase. Your facility is in one of the riches cities in Northern Maryland, and your residents deserve this kind of treatment. God cannot be pleased. He will take care of his own.

My mother was admitted to Autumn Lake for post-tracheostomy care, but unfortunately our experience was very concerning. The facility felt unprofessional and did not meet basic standards of cleanliness or care. From the moment we walked in, the smell was very unpleasant. You are immediately hit with a strong odor of urine and feces throughout the building. The bathrooms were so unsanitary that a family member had to bring cleaning supplies just to make them usable. Even after cleaning, the smell would only briefly improve before returning. During her stay, it became clear that many staff members were not adequately trained to manage her tracheostomy or feeding tube, which was alarming given the level of care she required. On more than one occasion, staff used water from the sink for her feeding tube, which is unacceptable. She was also placed lying down during feedings, which increases the risk of aspiration and should not be happening. The main reason for her stay was to be evaluated and treated by a respiratory team, but that never happened despite multiple requests. We also never saw a physician on site, even after asking several times, which raised serious concerns about oversight and patient safety. We also witnessed other residents in vulnerable situations without proper supervision, including individuals wandering the halls without assistance. It did not feel like patients were receiving the care and dignity they deserve. Ultimately, I made the decision to remove my mother because her condition did not seem to be improving and I was worried it was getting worse. She was discharged at my request and against their advice, and I felt a great sense of relief once she left. Based on this experience, I would strongly caution others against placing their loved ones here.

Today for the first time in 3 years, the Arcadia unit had a strong odor of urine. I have never smelt the unit like that before. And when I took some flowers to her room, there was a bag of trash on the floor that looked like it had a dirty diaper with feces on it. Otherwise, I had a good visit with my mom and I am very pleased with the care that she is receiving there. This is my very first complaint that I had to make.

Our mother has been residing at Autumn Care Chevy Chase for a year. We have been very impressed with how she is cared for and attended to. Our family frequents the facility weekly and are always greeted kindly and feel like our mother is being well cared for. It has been an adjustment for all of us moving our mother to Autumn Care full time but it is what she wanted. She enjoys socializing with the other patients as well as the staff. Our mother loves her room, it is clean and if ever we request deeper cleaning the staff handles it. Any concern later that arise, the staff is quick to call our family making sure that someone is notified immediately. We are thankful and appreciative of the personal touch the staff always have with our mother. It gives our family comfort knowing she is cared for round the clock.
