How families pay for skilled nursing in North Carolina

Most families in North Carolina cover assisted living, memory care and independent living out of pocket at first, often drawing on savings, retirement income and, when needed, proceeds from selling a home. Long-term care insurance, where a policy exists, can offset part of the monthly cost, though families should check the policy's terms since coverage for assisted living versus memory care can differ. Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, a benefit that helps pay for the cost of care, and it is worth asking a VA representative whether a particular community's services meet the program's requirements.
