A beautiful building is important.

"We provide care and services to the most vulnerable population. The pandemic only magnified the need for healthy, loving employees. We knew we would need all hands on deck. Memory Care

Each senior in our care has a unique life story, something that is very important to how we care for him or her. The Varietas® Memory Care Program relies on the things we learn about your loved one to comfort and connect with them in a warm and nurturing environment.

The Varietas® Program is a model of caring for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and age-related memory impairments. The tenets of the program are proven to maximize quality of life for individuals suffering from these disorders.

The program is designed to create a true therapeutic environment, reducing stressful stimuli and fostering the natural rhythms of each day. A combination of therapeutic and positive stimulation—including expressive arts, exercise, nutrition, reminiscing and cognitive activities—is used to enhance social engagement with peers, families and staff members.

A state-of-the-art security system also allows residents to live independently while remaining within the comfort of a safe and secure environment. And all Varietas® staff receive Specialized Dementia Training.

This facility is failing its residents, and much of the problem lies within the dietary department and its management, specifically Amy. There is a clear lack of basic safety protocols in the kitchen, and the way food is prepared is unacceptable and degrading. Residents are being treated without dignity, and the conditions raise serious concerns about their health and well-being which is causing their dying process to speed up. These ongoing issues are not only negligent but dangerous, and they demand immediate investigation and accountability.” I wouldn’t even send my dog here, let alone my poor sick grandparents. Meadow Brook Senior Living staff, everyone, cares deeply for their residents. They treat them with kindness and dignity. Meadow Brook always has multiple of activities to involve as many who choose to participate and a great therapy group along very caring medical staff. Our mom has been living here for 5 years and we still feel we made the best choice.

After visiting several facilities, my wife and I moved her 101 year old mother into Meadow Brook Assisted Living in the fall of 2023. The acceleration of her dementia resulted in our decision to move her into the Memory Care side of the facility in December 2023 where she resided until her death in January, 2025. My wife and I cannot say enough positive things about the leadership and staff of Meadow Brook. We made unannounced visits to the Memory Care unit multiple time a week for over a year. We were consistently amazed at the kindness and care with which the Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Therapists and other staff members treated my mother-in-law and the other residents. We marveled at the cleanliness of the facility and the hands-on leadership which the director, Allison, demonstrated on a daily basis. Near the end of my mother-in-law's life, Meadow Brook engaged timely hospice care to provide additional support. By the grace of God, my wife was able to be at the bedside of her mother when she peacefully left this earth. We were blessed to have her in the capable hands of Meadow Brook Memory Care during the final, most challenging, year of her 102 year old life.

Don’t be deceived by its beauty. Talk to the "memory care" residents.

When my grandfather arrived at the "memory care" wing of Meadow Brook, staff updated me by email that he was happily pushing people in wheelchairs because he was doing so well. This was easy for me to believe, because he had done so well during his month at a skilled nursing facility once released from a couple weeks in the hospital due to an infection.

But it was downhill from there—more than likely due to Meadow Brook's near-complete lack of memory care activities, its emphasis on apartment-style living that increases isolation, and its use of benzodiazepines/pharmacological restraint in general (something I questioned in particular that they refused to respond to unlike other facilities I asked). As my dad put it from what he saw multiple times in the "memory care" wing’s (beautiful) day room: “They were all zombies who couldn’t even hold their heads up.”

My grandfather fell 12 times (that we know of) in his month and a half at Meadow Brook. He developed acute encephalopathy, a subdural hematoma, at least one UTI and was sent to a psychiatric hospital to get his “meds figured out." Yet, he kept going because he had always loved life and had hope. Unfortunately, that hope was unfounded. His first POA refused to move him to another facility—even when Meadow Brook eventually urged her to do so once the Department of Health and Adult Protective Service were contacted—and Meadow Brook never contacted his successor POAs when moving him was a matter of life or death (he, in fact, died two weeks ago Sunday) and, therefore, superseded HIPAA regulations.

After my grandfather’s final fall at Meadow Brook, he was taken to the hospital yet again. It was one fall too many. The bright spot of this post is that I convinced his POA to release him to a skilled nursing facility down the street. Skilled nurses and hospice workers in that facility’s memory care unit showed him the utmost respect and dignity during his final week and a half of life.

If you’re thinking of sending your loved one to Meadow Brook for memory care, please don’t. Or at least educate yourself based on complaint records with the State and also tour the facility morning, noon and night at unplanned times. I gave Meadow Brook two stars only because I have no experience with its assisted living portion, which is where all the amenities are.

Extremely poor communication (and I’m pretty sure their communication director doesn’t have any understanding of HIPAA). They over-medicate in their memory ward and are severely understaffed for what they say they provide.

UPDATE: In response to the owner’s response (whoever the owner is): The family member who was in your care died. So your apology is too late. Please go spend 24 hours in the memory area yourself.
