My mother spent only 2 1/2 months at the Maplewood. Though her time there was short, we saw her go from being reluctant and somewhat resentful of having to leave her home, to being engaged and content. All the things she worried about not liking at a skilled nursing home either never materialized or were proved to be wrong. Mom loved meeting new people, being involved in all the activities provided there, and, most of all the soup. When it came time for her final days, she was no longer a stranger there. Having gotten to know her so well, the staff knew what mom found comfort in (back rubs, Scripture reading, etc). The staff were not only her care givers, they had become her friends.
