My father lived here as a tenant for nearly four years. During the early years he required very little assistance and our experience was generally positive. However, toward the end of his stay we encountered several issues that I believe other families should be aware of when considering this facility.

First, I want to recognize the positive aspects of our experience. Stacy, the Director of Activities, and the kitchen staff were consistently kind and attentive. My father enjoyed interacting with them and spoke very highly of them.

That said, in my experience some staff members could benefit from additional training in communication and compassionate care. I understand that caregiving is difficult work and that residents may sometimes be challenging, but respectful treatment is important.

For example, on one occasion I was sitting with my father during dinner when another resident at the table appeared to be experiencing a diabetic episode. When an aide arrived, I observed her speaking to the resident in a raised and critical tone about his blood sugar levels. When EMTs arrived shortly afterward, her tone changed significantly.

Another challenge we experienced involved billing transparency. In our case, it was difficult to obtain an itemized explanation of the monthly “care points” we were being billed for. I made multiple phone calls and sent emails requesting clarification but did not receive the detailed breakdown I was seeking.

After my father returned for what was described to us as hospice-related care, his care points increased from 19 to 100 (we understood his care was significantly changing). I believe it is reasonable to expect a clear explanation of what services those charges represent.

After my father passed away, still waiting for an itemized listing of his charges we asked if he was being charged for transportation to the dining room, which they confirmed, and they also confirmed my father transported himself. After raising this issue, they agreed to refund around $500.

On two separate visits, I personally observed my father’s catheter bag full and either resting on the floor or hanging from the bed.

Families should also be aware that, according to the facility’s policy, a 30-day notice to vacate is required after a resident passes away, meaning rent will still be charged during that period. Because we had to pay for the next month, we left some furniture temporarily in the room. When we returned to collect the remaining items, we discovered that a piece of furniture had been moved during repainting and had not been returned.

Finally, we are currently attempting to resolve what we believe to be more than $500 in care point charges that remained after my father passed away. We have been informed that recovering those funds may require additional legal steps.

I am sharing our experience so that other families can ask detailed questions about billing practices, policies, and care expectations before making decisions about long-term care for a loved one.

I met with Kayla Curtis to introduce myself and our company, and to explore how we might build a professional relationship. Kayla was very pleasant and knowledgeable in her role, and she provided me with a lot of valuable insight. I look forward to the opportunity to work together in the future.

I was pretty overwhelmed looking into assisted living options, but Kayla at Heather’s Manor made navigating everything a breeze. She was super responsive, helped me figure out what I should be asking and worked insanely fast for a quick turnaround time for my mom. She knew all the answers, had a great sense of humor and made the whole process manageable.
