This place should be shutdown!!! DO NOT send your loved ones to this facility. It is poorly maintained and understaffed. Food was terrible and rehabilitation physical therapy was practically non-existent. Very surprised this place hasn't already been shuttered. There are much nicer places nearby that will actually help your person rehabilitate instead of just wasting away.

Rehabilitation is undoubtedly all about the people. Everyone from support staff to CNAs, and nursing are compassionate, helpful, and prompt in responding to individual needs and answering questions. Medical and APRNs are qualified, intelligent and willing to go the extra mile to insure patient needs are met. And administration is always available and willing to interrupt their own work to meet with patients as requested. Finally, I have never met a more devoted and committed PT and OT team that work you out, guide you and push you gently to accomplish your goals. They explain their process so there is a meeting of the mind and their qualifications are stellar along with everyone at Apple Rehab Old Saybrook. I highly recommend them having just finished my short term stay.

Do not send your loved one here. If I could rate the nurses and actual caregivers there I would give them 5 stars. It takes special people to do this hands on work and they were ALL amazing people who were doing the very best every moment of everyday. The problem at Apple as we experienced it is with the administrative infrastructure. This establishment has organizational issues that makes no sense and is a detriment to not only the patients but the nurses and staff themselves. My father is now in the hospital after a stay at Apple and it was only after WE told THEM that my father needed to be sent to the ER that the director of the facility and the social worker said they would do whatever they needed to to get him the care he needed at Apple. Really??? Shouldn’t that be the baseline expectation for every person who enters their facility? UPDATE: My stepmother had to finally - insist - that the nurse call an ambulance as they were trying to remedy the situation far, far too late. When the transport finally came, the driver informed her that this wasn’t the first time having to come there and take a patient to the emergency room due to poor care. When my father got to the hospital they tested him for a UTI which was positive and severe by that point. We were told that he was tested for one at Apple and the results were supposedly negative. The pain my father was in by that point was immense and he was intensely dehydrated. Further, my father hadn’t eaten for 5 days prior to us having him taken to the emergency room. We were told that blood work was taken but no one at Apple could speak to any results. By the next day in the hospital my father couldn’t swallow. Come to find out he had a thrush infection that had become systemic. From the limited hands on care my father received from any doctor at Apple, I know they never would have found this infection. He spent over a week in the hospital trying to get him back on track. He can now at least swallow liquids but he has a long way to go before he gets back to where he was before he went to Apple. We now have him at Gladeview as of last night. They gave him a full work up the minute he arrived and we were all informed of the doctor who was assigned to my father. No such information or service was given to us at Apple. It was a hellish experience first and foremost for my father to have experienced but for our family as a whole. Tragic and nearly life threatening.

My sister has been there for 2+ years due to the effects of Covid. She has CP and is in a wheelchair, on a feeding tube and unable to speak. She has some wonderful nurses and her APRN is absolutely wonderful as is their current rec director. But there have been times when the ball has been absolutely dropped. Not updating medical records, never receiving the orders to have my sister ready for her Drs. appointments, not keeping up w/ oral care etc. It is very difficult to reach the staff. On some days we have called 8 times to try and just get an update on how my sister was doing that day. No one to pick up the phone. And of course when we complain to at least the 3rd director in 2 years he'll talk to staff about it. But in good faith I can not blame the staff - it seems like they are overworked and always short handed. And I believe this is due to Apple just not wanting to pay. I have seen one nurse have to cover two wing with minimal assistance on the weekends. Again some great nurses and CNA's, the APRN and the rec director are top notch but as an organization Apple itself leaves much to be desired. I am looking to move my sister to a facility closer to home (we're 40 miles away)
