Don’t be fooled by the beautiful entry way and well rehearsed sales pitch. My mother was at the Bristal for 4:years and was planning to leave. Although the main areas are well maintained, the residents’ rooms are ignored. A drawer in my mother’s kitchenette needed new sliders and the solution was to nail the drawer shut. Her shower was too hot to use forcing my mother to wash at the sink and wash her hair in the kitchen. It took 2 years, many requests and finally family intervention to get maintenance to address the issue. The HVAC unit in the room made a terrible racket and several requests for repairs were submitted and ignored. My mother resorted to heating the room hot during the day and turning the unit off at night so she could sleep without the noise. Housekeeping was not any better. At one point we put a camera in the room to monitor since we did not live close. I timed the daily cleaning of the room and it was 2 minutes. The housekeeper would empty the trash and leave without ever wiping down a surface or moping a floor. After complaining that the room had not been thoroughly cleaned in 3 weeks a new housekeeper was sent up. Regretfully within a week the previous young housekeeper was back and again did not clean. There is no supervision or follow up to problems to see if they are resolved or corrective action taken. Many residents I met voiced the same problems and their frustration with unaddressed maintenance and cleaning issues. Meals were another issue and a daily topic of anger and frustration. Although there is a resident committee to discuss dining issues nothing ever changed or improved for more than a day or two. Frequently meals were cold, over cooked or just not edible so we maintained a supply of yogurt and soups in my mother’s room. On more than one occasion they completely forgot to bring a sick meal to her room. I could go on but my point is that the Bristal is not the perfect place they try to sell you when you tour the facility. Is it worse than other places, I don’t know. We thought it was a beautiful, well maintained residence for my mother where she could remain active, happy and engaged with other seniors. In reality it was anything but that.

My mom has been in The Bristal at Lake Grove since the end of February. She has a beautiful apartment and the entire community is elegant. The staff is very caring, knowledgeable and friendly. Safety is key here which is most important. Definitely go for a tour if you or one of your loved ones is in need of assisted care!

The team at the Bristal have been wonderful to work with and take very good care of my mother, who has dementia and lives in the memory care wing (Reflections). My mother had been very resistant to leaving her home and was a real handful her first few weeks at the Bristal, but the team seemed to know exactly how to handle her and it did not take long for her to become acclimated and happy. The Bristal offers a wide variety of weekly activities for their residents and she is now participating in most, if not all of them, on a weekly basis. The staff have also been a resource for me and my family as we try to navigate the challenges associated with having a parent with dementia. The care staff in the unit are very friendly, kind and patient, and my family and I are very grateful for each and every one of them. The facility is beautiful, very welcoming and perfectly maintained. My family and I are very appreciative for the entire team at the Bristal for all their support and ongoing care.
