A Severe Safety & Care Risk

This is a detailed warning following my husband's 5 month stay in Sunrise of Dublin Memory Care. I moved him out because he was unsafe and poorly cared for. Management listened to my complaints but provided only temporary patches rather than fixing issues.

The positives:
The front desk staff was polite and the business manager helped fix incorrect invoices. Some caregivers seemed to care but are working in a severely understaffed environment.

Hygiene:
My husband's room, bathroom, bedding, & clothing were not kept clean.

Biohazard Exposure:
My husband was exposed to dried feces at various times on his bed quilt, pillow shams, shoes, and top sheet. The Director offered to have the items washed, but there was no investigation as to how this went unnoticed by staff.

Bathroom sanitation:
I discovered a large amount of loose human feces sitting in the bottom of my husband's unlined trash can. The toilet, shower, and floor routinely went uncleaned.

Personal care neglect:
Basic grooming was ignored despite paying mandatory fees. His fingernails were never cut, he was left unshaven, and laundry piled up for weeks.

Room Cleanliness:
Floors were frequently dirty. Nightstands, electronics, and baseboards were heavily coated in dust.

Dining Room Cleanliness:
Tablecloths with dried spilled food from previous meals were re-used.

Room Lockout:
A caregiver locked my husband out of his quarters for her own monitoring convenience. It was fixed only because I arrived as it was happening.

Emotional Neglect:
Distressed residents are routinely ignored while staff chat nearby.

Rate increases:
Monthly care rates were increased for services rarely rendered such as transfer assistance. My husband was daily left to navigate chair/bed transfers alone.

Billing Practices:
Invoices regularly featured erroneous late fees, overlapping multi-month charges, and confusing formatting.

Call Button:
My husband's call button alerts were often canceled without anyone checking on him. Management could track the problem but failed to fix it.

Staff shortages:
Severe staff shortages left residents unmonitored for hours. My husband suffered a major health emergency while left unattended in a common area. It was discovered because I happened to visit.

Conflicting Incident Reports:
I received contradictory descriptions about a fall my husband suffered. Two staff members called me a few hours apart, each with a different story about the fall.

Unauthorized Medical Management:
The contracted Nurse Practitioner ordered unapproved tests and medications previously discontinued by our cardiologist.

Restricted Access to Medical Care:
Medical attention is unavailable except on Thursdays via a Nurse Practitioner with no appointments, you just sit in the room and wait.

Failure of Symptom Reporting:
There is no internal system for caregivers to report clinical symptoms to nurses or families. I discovered my husband had a chronic health issue through an informal comment from staff to another family member.

Medication Communication Gaps:
For "as needed" medications, there is no protocol for caregivers to communicate symptoms to the nurse.

Activity Schedule: Meaningful programming was non-existent. "Baking Club" consisted of residents passively watching a staff member make brownies:

Ineffective Management:
The Director relied on issuing memos which failed to fix problems. The Memory Care Manager was in her office or away at training instead of out on the floor, leaving little direct oversight of caregivers.

The Verdict:
Don't be fooled by the large room size & charismatic sales team. The salesperson isn't the one providing care. Once there, my husband was treated poorly. Rates were raised with no benefits added. Unless you plan to be there 24/7 overseeing care, doing the cleaning, laundry, and medical monitoring yourself, look elsewhere.

My MIL moved to Sunrise after a bad experience in another local memory care facility. Everything about Sunrise was significantly better, and we are so grateful for the wonderful care she received. The staff is attentive, kind, available and caters to each patient’s individual needs. My MIL had advanced dementia, and they had experience & expertise on how to handle. I HIGHLY recommend!

My mother was a resident at Sunrise of Dublin until her passing. It’s never easy for someone to leave their home, but the staff and environment at Sunrise truly made it feel like a home away from home.
My sisters and I loved the warm atmosphere, and most of all, the incredible staff. Everyone from the director and nursing staff to the aides, kitchen team, and front desk was consistently kind, caring, and welcoming. You can tell they genuinely enjoy what they do, which makes such a difference when you’re trusting others to care for someone you love.

My mom often said that living there was the next best thing to being in her own home. The kindness and respect the staff show to every resident is truly remarkable.

I am so grateful that she was able to spend the last year of her life in such a beautiful and compassionate place.
