My mother lived at Karen Acres for 2 years, 5 months. During that time we visited many times - at all times of the day and night. I can say that I have nothing but praise for all of the staff who work there, from Pam the administrator, to the head nurse, Brandy, the nurses, Elizabeth, Sheila, Jenny, Walter, Katelyn, Enrique and possibly others, to the CNAs, John the chef, Chris the maintenance guy - the way they put their skills together, and show love to the residents there is exemplary. My mother was a very sweet person but wasn't always the easiest person to care for. However, I saw the way that they were able to gain her trust, show her genuine love, and provide for her needs, and that why I give the very highest praise and recommendation for Karen Acres Health Care Center. It's true that in the past there was a head nurse who was rude and condescending at times. Her departure was welcome news to us. This has unfortunately resulted in reviews that linger forever, but I assure you that the current staff has the kind of spirit, love and attitude that you would want for people who are caring for your loved one. Karen Acres is not as fancy as some other places in town but it has a home-like, family atmosphere. My mom had physical therapy at possibly the largest and nicest facility before we ever considered long-term care. But we, and Mom, preferred Karen Acres over the the other place. Fancy doesn't make up for a friendly, home-like place. In the last weeks of mom's life one of the hospice nurses had high praise for the care at Karen Acres. This person sees patients in care centers all over Polk and surrounding counties, and shared with us that Karen Acres has the best care they have seen. Another aspect that I cannot praise highly enough is the way that Karen Acres communicated with me. They always made sure that we were kept in the loop on all aspects of Mom's care. Some of this took the form of emails sometimes phone calls when needed, and we also had periodic care conferences, where we discussed how to best meet Mom's needs. They gave me great confidence that they truly were covering all the bases in order to provide for my dear mother. From the very first day when they graciously welcomed her at the door, to the very difficult end, the wonderful staff of Karen Acres proved they truly love their residents and know how to provide excellent care. My wife, Donna and I thank all of you from the very bottom of our hearts.
