You "buy" a condo or apartment for around $500,000. That purchases you the privilege of paying $5,000/month in "maintenance" (their version of a HOA fee).

The food is bad, and they have no interest in making it better. Food that you are contractually obligated to buy $500 of every month. If you don't eat their food, you pay $500 anyway.

The only thing this facility really offers you, is a smaller distance to move all your things when you have to go to assisted living, and then to a nursing home.

If I were you, I would save my $500,000, and the other $1,000,000 you'll pay in maintenance over the following 15ish years, and just hire a full-time, in-home nurse for the same amount they charge for maintenance ($5,000/month), when you actually need it.

When the Alexian Brother owned and ran the place, they charged pretty much the same thing - but they made great efforts to make the village an amazing place to retire.

But since Ascension's take over, they nickel and dime the operation, attempting to squeeze every drop of profit out of it that they can. What's been squeezed the most, is the food.

Rather than being able to peruse a menu curated by you the residents, now, you can choose between various types of reheated meals, that Ascension graciously selects for you. Meals that the people in the kitchen either have no interest, or no ability, to fix/season properly.
