About 10 weeks ago, our family’s lives changed in an instant when my father suffered a severe stroke that affected both his ability to speak and walk. What made it even more shocking was that just hours earlier he had been living life exactly as he always had — driving himself to the store several times that day and spending hours tending to his beloved vegetable garden. After waking up from his afternoon nap, everything changed. After being evaluated at our local hospital, it quickly became clear that his condition required a higher level of care, so he was transferred nearly two hours away to a neurological medical center where he began the difficult journey toward recovery. Unfortunately, after his discharge he was placed in a nursing facility that simply wasn't equipped to continue the progress he had made. Instead of improving, he ended up back in the hospital facing additional complications beyond the stroke itself. Thankfully, once he was stable enough for skilled nursing care, he was transferred to Carrolton of Fayetteville. To be honest, our family was extremely apprehensive. Given our previous experience, we had every reason to be worried about placing our father in another facility. Those fears disappeared very quickly. My father has now been at Carrolton of Fayetteville for 30 days, and our family cannot say enough good things about the care he has received. The staff has been nothing short of amazing — friendly, compassionate, professional, and incredibly competent. More importantly, they treat him with dignity, patience, and genuine kindness. When he arrived, he was often withdrawn, frustrated, and combative — understandable emotions considering everything he had endured. Today, we see a completely different person. While he has not yet regained his ability to walk or speak fully, he is trying again, and that alone is an incredible victory. The spark is back. With every visit, we notice positive changes. Sometimes it's clearer attempts at verbalizing words. Sometimes it's movement in a part of his body that doctors once thought might never return. Each small improvement gives our family hope, and those moments are happening more and more often. It isn't just our family noticing the difference either. Friends and relatives who visit regularly all comment on how much better he looks, how much happier he seems, and how far he has come in such a short time. Recovery after a severe stroke is never easy, and we know there is still a long road ahead. But for the first time since this journey began, we truly feel hopeful about the future. We firmly believe that the positive, encouraging atmosphere at Carrolton of Fayetteville has played a major role in that progress. To everyone at Carrolton of Fayetteville: thank you for caring for our father not just as a patient, but as a person. Thank you for giving him back his motivation, his spirit, and giving our family something we desperately needed — hope. We will always be grateful.
