About Hillwood Memory Care Home

Hillwood Memory Care Home provides specialized dementia and Alzheimer's care in Bethesda, Maryland. Part of the Cedar Creek Memory Care Homes group, it operates as a small, eight-bed residential community with 24/7 staffing and a high daytime staff-to-resident ratio designed to deliver personalized, compassionate care.

The community emphasizes individualized care plans that address both emotional and physical support for residents with memory loss. Caregivers undergo specialized training in dementia and Alzheimer's care and are skilled at recognizing subtle changes in residents' conditions, adapting their approach as needs evolve. Many staff members have served the community for 10 to 20 years. The facility includes access to doctors, nurses, therapists, dentists, podiatrists, and other health care professionals who visit residents, though residents may also continue seeing their own physicians. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are available by doctor's order.

Activities are central to daily life at Hillwood and include art, music, and reminiscence therapy tailored to each resident's interests and life history. A full-time activity therapist designs individualized programs featuring hands-on activities such as gardening, puzzles, sing-alongs, and sensory engagement. Daily exercises and group activities encourage socialization, and the program adjusts regularly to match residents' changing abilities. Residents also benefit from three home-cooked meals daily served in a communal dining area, with menu options tailored to individual preferences and dietary needs.

Located in a tranquil part of Bethesda, Hillwood provides a serene, homelike setting surrounded by natural beauty that fosters a safe, supportive atmosphere. The intimate eight-resident environment ensures each resident receives personal attention and privacy is respected. Family involvement is encouraged, with the care team maintaining open communication and helping families understand the challenges of dementia and Alzheimer's care.

In most cases, residents receive long-term care at Hillwood throughout their lives. The facility can accommodate residents whose health status qualifies for hospice care through nursing support from local hospice organizations. In rare cases where a resident's care needs exceed Cedar Creek's licensed capabilities, the team works closely with families to facilitate a smooth transition to appropriate alternative care.

We had a very positive experience with Cedar Creek's Hillwood assisted living facility. Many of the staff have worked there for years, and quickly settled our mother into her new surroundings. They managed her medications and specific Alzheimer's symptoms, and matched activities with her abilities. When the time came for hospice care, Hillwood worked seamlessly with the hospice organization to ensure that our mother's last days were comfortable and peaceful. We will always be grateful that we found Hillwood for our family's needs!

The staff at Hillwood are wonderful. Whenever I visit, I am greeted by warm and friendly faces. The small home concept is perfect for residents and families who are dealing with Alzheimer's or other dementia. I highly recommend Hillwood (and Cedar Creek) to anyone searching for a memory care option for a loved one.

Posting on Behalf of Hillwood Family Member Sharron Caplan May 15th, 2023 I transferred my husband Jeffrey Caplan from a Memory Care unit in Olney, his home for four and a half years, to Hillwood Cedar Creek. I am happy to report this decision to make the change of care has proven to be a wise move. For many months prior to the change of facility, I toured five additional Memory Care homes in Montgomery County, a most challenging process to experience TWICE. Fortunately, I found Hillwood Cedar Creek and felt I no longer had to continue the search. Hillwood Cedar Creek is a welcoming home of only eight residents and several trained professionals. I find the sweet rambler and well landscaped grounds reflective of a home Jeffrey can relate to. The intimate setting is soothing. As Jeffrey’s dementia descent heightened the time was right to make the change. The caring and professional staff understand his needs and mine. Communication is excellent and yet, not overly intrusive. I trust everyone and feel comfortable that Jeffrey is in the right place. This odyssey continues to be a life passage I never dreamed… Fortunately, the most ably trained staff at Hillwood Cedar Creek and I are on the same page which is a great comfort. I am happy to share my perceptions with anyone who is contemplating moving a loved one. Sharron Caplan

Hillwood is Amazing! My Uncle has been there since October of 2019 and he is very happy. If you want your love one to be safe, happy and well cared for this is the place for them! I am so thankful for all the staff and management do for my Uncle.

Mom moved from Auxiliary House to Hillwood when she needed more care. Both houses are managed by Cedar Creek. Fabulous company that knows dementia inside and out and cares for the residents in small homes (not institutional entities). Staff are great and have a long tenure with the company, the management is helpful and informed, and we couldn't be happier with the care they provide. Strongly recommend. It was a great place for Mom.
