I spent several months at Horizon Recuperative Care thanks to Medi-Cal, and overall I had a very positive experience. It truly felt like a home, and the environment supported my healing and rebuilding process. The staff were generally kind, warm, and welcoming. Several stood out to me personally, including Jeremy, Alyssa, Ernesto, Sherri, Aycela, and Kassandra (clipboard). My case manager, Andrew met with me weekly and was extremely helpful in keeping me focused on my goals. I also met with my care coordinator, Andrea Niboli, who assisted with medication refills and overall support. I genuinely feel like I made a complete 180 during my time there, and I was even chosen as Resident of the Month, which was a meaningful and encouraging surprise. That said, I did experience ongoing concerns with one staff member, Roxanne, who in my experience regularly came across as argumentative and unprofessional in interactions with residents. One incident in particular involved a new resident who had been at the facility for less than an hour and, following an interaction with Roxanne regarding medication, became extremely distressed and chose to leave. I found this especially concerning, as Horizon is intended to be a supportive environment for individuals beginning their recovery process. After several incidents, I brought my concerns directly to Kalin, the director. She listened and assured me she would address the situation with Roxanne. While there was a brief period of improvement afterward, the same patterns re-emerged over time. In the final weeks of my stay, interactions felt increasingly tense, aggressive, and consistently unprofessional, which impacted my sense of comfort in the program. I also want to clarify that Horizon Recuperative Care is NOT a homeless shelter. It is a residential recovery program designed to support individuals through structured healing and stabilization. Overall, I would still absolutely recommend Horizon to anyone who is trying to improve their life. I was genuinely sad to leave because the staff had become like a family to me. I feel very grateful for the opportunity to stay there and receive that level of care. This experience was a meaningful part of my recovery and overall stability.
