I came to be at Brookdale Lakeway skilled nursing after a fall and hip surgery. I was very skeptical about what I would face here. This is not the most luxurious place I have ever been, but it is more than adequate. The workers are friendly, caring and know their stuff. They offer a lot more than I felt up to taking advantage of, but I enjoyed what I participated in. Their rehab staff will push you as hard as you are willing and accommodate when you falter. The food is not gourmet, but tasty and filling. I would recommend this facility to anyone needing this type of care.

I was moved from Baylor Scot & White after a short but serious illness. I came to Brookdale Skilled Nursing Center in Lakeway where I stayed until two weeks short of my insurance coverage. Their nursing staff, house keeping and other staff were friendly and helpful. My family employed unskilled companions from outside agencies round the clock until the last weekend I was there. I had regular speech therapy and occupational therapy. The therapists were outstanding. Although I was confined to a wheelchair, I learned to walk unaided. While in the Activity Center with many other inpatient residents, I was assaulted by another patient. That patient was clearly having hallucinations and focused on me as the target of her rage. She first tried to pull an attendant away from protecting me. That attendant on her first days had not been trained in emergency procedures. She fled the room to summon help. I was sitting with my back to the person at the end of our table. My wheelchair was locked down. The person grabbed the back of my hair, unlocked the right side of my wheelchair and wrenched me around and slapped me hard across the face and right eye. I managed to get free, started to scream for help and tried to hold down the locks to my wheelchair. Staff came running down the hall. One of my favorite nurses got between us and protected me. Several surrounded my attacker who was using an upright walker and led her from the room. Once secure, my nurse hastily retrieved a snap for cold eye poultice which prevented my eye from swelling. Later in my room the Director of the Facility brought in a Lakeway Police Officer to take my statement. After relaying my statement I asked the Director if the violent individual had been removed from the facility. She had not. She had been confined to her room with an attendant. Shortly after my husband arrived with a suitcase. He too questioned the Director as to why a violent patient would be allowed to remain in an unlocked down facility. Our names were on the door with no place to hide. We left and the Director will not release my records. Will you be safe?

“My Experience at Brookdale Lakeway Nursing Facility” I stayed at Brookdale Lakeway for a little over two weeks after major surgery, and as an A&O x3 patient who could still advocate for myself, the experience was extremely troubling. I can’t imagine how patients with less independence are being cared for. On my very first night, I pulled the call light because I needed wipes — I was left sitting on the toilet for almost 10 minutes. I eventually had to get up on my own and walk into the hallway in my robe to find a CNA, who was simply cleaning rooms. “Help” should actually mean help. If I had fallen or hit my head, it could have been serious. They also forgot my breakfast my first morning. I even had to advocate just to have my name put on my door so I wouldn’t be overlooked again. The food was so poor that I had to rely on vanilla Ensure for nutrition — but the facility ran out of Ensures for two days. When they finally restocked, all they had was chocolate, which I can’t drink post-surgery. I ended up spending my own money to order vanilla Ensures just to stop my rapid weight loss. I lost over 10 pounds during my stay. Staffing and supplies are another huge issue. Many staff members appeared extremely lazy, and the nurses didn’t even have access to basic supplies like saline. How can proper patient care happen when the staff doesn’t have what they need? Housekeeping left my room dirty for days, and I had to beg for clean towels and washcloths. Despite all of this, I want to acknowledge the few staff members who genuinely kept me going: Naomi ,Jasper, Latoya, Miriam, Kaitlynn, Lavender and Bobby. Their kindness and effort made a real difference during a very difficult time, and I’m truly grateful for them. But overall, this facility broke me down mentally and physically

Dont leave your family here. At night, no one attends to them as they should. My mom would have to get them to help my dad or else no one would go see him and shed have to get onto them about. They refused to answer my mom when shed ask them what was wrong with him. The only person who truly took care of my dad was my mom and 2 other nurses.
