Memory care is a specialized type of elder care tailored specifically for the needs of individuals with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other cognitive disorders.
Like a lot of things in Texas, our story started with some larger-than-life dreams. We’re located in beautiful Steiner Ranch, named after National Cowboy Hall of Famer member T. C. Buck Steiner. Born at the end of 1899, Buck ran away and joined Wild West shows at the age of twelve. He toured the country as a rodeo performer, spent time in Hollywood as a stunt man, then settled back in Texas to eventually start a successful saddle and boot making shop in Austin. He bought what became known as Steiner Ranch, then sold it to be transformed into the master planned community it is today.
The next big idea came in 1998, when a retirement community management and a developer approached the University of Texas with the idea of building a retirement community for university staff and alumni. The Texas Exes had envisioned a similar community. The dream for Longhorn Village was born a premier Life Plan Community dedicated to lifelong learning, life enrichment, and healthy longevity.
In the summer of 2009, the dream came true when the first residents moved in.

I enjoyed a brief tour of their recently renovated space. This is a very upscale location and well deserving of its reputation. I toured one bedroom and two bedroom residences. These are highly desirable for those seeking a luxury retirement community experience. Wait listing for certain residences is to be expected.

All this place cares about is making money. They accepted my mother into their Skilled Nursing Facility. Sent me a text confirming and told the social worker at the hospital it was confirmed. The following day they came back and denied her admission. Stating that they were under the impression she was coming in as " private pay" for long term care, although the text message for admission clearly stated "Longhorn Village Skilled Nursing." My elderly mother was so let down and disappointed after being told she had a place to go. This place ONLY care about making money.

Longhorn Village is a wonderful place for those looking for independent living. One thing to beware of, however. In the contract it states to move out to another facility or home requires 120 days notice, and all fees are due for the entire 120 days regardless of when in that period you move out. Further, the Entrance Fee, typically $500,000 or more, is refunded 90% when the apartment is vacated. But what they don't tell you is that it will take between 12 and 18 months to get this money back. Generally speaking, at $5000 per month in monthly fees and 5% on your money, if you moved out in the first 30 days of your notice you will pay $15,000 in monthly fees after vacating, and lose between $25,000 and $37,500 in lost income from the Entrance Fee. In short, the privilege of moving out could cost you between $40,000 and $52,500, perhaps more. Buyer beware; they are unwilling to negotiate or mitigate.
