About Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital - Westborough

Whittier Westborough Transitional Care Unit is a long-term acute care facility located in Westborough, Massachusetts, providing hospital-level care for patients who require a longer length of stay following acute hospitalization. The 25-bed transitional care unit serves patients throughout New England who are acutely ill and need complex medical treatments and procedures.

The facility operates as part of Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital and employs an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care. In addition to the transitional care unit, the hospital operates a 40-bed intensive rehabilitation facility that provides three hours of combined therapy per day up to seven days per week for patients requiring hospital-level care and intensive rehabilitation. Specialized services include pulmonary education, ventilator management and weaning, and tracheostomy care and weaning.

Patients are admitted to the transitional care unit following treatment in traditional acute care hospitals when they no longer require intensive diagnostic procedures. The care provided is more individualized and resource-intensive than what is available in sub-acute or skilled nursing facilities. The facility also maintains an outpatient center offering one-to-one therapy, specialty clinics, and an aquatics program for patients referred from primary care physicians, inpatient rehabilitation, or home health agencies.

The facility features a therapy dog in training as part of its patient support services. Staff includes an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, and support personnel dedicated to helping patients recover from acute illnesses and return to independence.

Great staff at Whittier Rehab. PT/OT staff were wonderful. Pushed but always aware of your limits. Nursing and CNA staff were attentive and pleasant. Physical plant was clean and easily maneuvered. Case manager (.AG) went above and beyond!

I had a wonderful experience at Whittier out patient. The staff was very pleasant and caring. My physical therapist, Sam, was outstanding. She worked with me to regain my strength, balance and flexibility. I highly recommend Whittier.

I wanted to say how great Whittier was. Would highly recommend Dr. J and Dr. Tarova. They were both great. Had a great staff of PT and OT for my therapies. And they were all great. Can't say enough good about them. The nurses were also right on spot. If I rang the bell there was someone immediately there. I highly recommend this place and always will. Thank you all so much in my aftercare Chris Faherty Although take care of that one

My family’s experience with Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital — especially my Dad’s nurse practitioner/lead NaDarron, occupational therapist Hillary, physical therapists Elizabeth & Scott, speech therapist Abby, respiratory team Nancy & Bill, West Wing nursing team members Amber, Kim & Meg, East Wing nursing team member Rachel, and case manager Ana — was out of this world. My dad entered Whittier in mid-October a critically ill & sick man with double pneumonia on a ventilator and a trach, using a feeding tube, on dialysis, and much much more. At that point, he had already been in the ICU for a month prior to coming to Whittier. He had been so deconditioned from his extended duration in bed, and was unable to walk. The Whittier team worked fluidly with him at every obstacle and every turn, treated our family with the upmost respect and care, and bravely rehabilitated my dad who was most certainly an extremely complex case. By the grace of the Whittier team and God, my dad came home just a few days ago. He has no ventilator, no trach, no feeding tube and is able to eat, talk and walk with the minimal assistance of a walker. With a couple more weeks of in home therapy (which our case manager seamlessly set up for us), as well as outpatient therapy, my dad will be walking and functioning independently again very soon. At the careful and dedicated hands of his team at Whittier, my dad has been given a second chance at life. As we continue to settle him back into our home, I am even more grateful and appreciative for all of the work that the Whittier team has done for him. We would not be here today without them and will sing their praises for eternity.

I had a motorcycle accident in July 2025. I ended up with severe injuries too many to list. The nurses here for the most part go above and beyond. The picture i posted of the signs of encouragement were made by a staff member that works here. She made them for me during an especially difficult time and it really meant the world to me. Above and beyond. She also brought me coffee one morning just to cheer me up. I did have some complaints during my stay and they were all addressed quickly and with veracity. I wouldn't have made it without the help I received here. The nursing, physical therapy and occupational therapy, the nurses aids. All are exceptional. Over all this is the place you want your loved one or yourself to go if you need it. They truly care and will go above and beyond for patients. Thank you so much for helping me during my most difficult time in this life. I know I wasn't easy. Thank you.
