What Families Think

Families of hospice, palliative, and home-health patients report a sharp split in experience: many praise specific nurses and hospice teams as extraordinarily compassionate during difficult final days, while a large number of other reviewers describe billing surprises, medication delays, and poor phone responsiveness during care that mattered most. Because TRU delivers care in patients' homes and partner hospital units rather than a residential campus, reviews focus almost entirely on the quality and reliability of nursing, communication, and billing rather than amenities.

The Good

 • Nurses and aides frequently described as deeply compassionate
 • Smooth hospital-to-home hospice transitions described by families
 • 24-hour phone support line valued during emergencies
 • Grief counseling and support groups offered to wider community
 • Hospice program accredited by The Joint Commission

The Bad

 • Multiple reports of unexpected, high, or confusing hospice billing
 • Several reviewers cite delayed or missed medication deliveries
 • Communication and callback responsiveness frequently criticized
 • One report of a mental health hold placed on a patient against family wishes

About TRU Community Care

TRU Community Care is a nonprofit organization providing compassionate care across Colorado for individuals and families facing serious illness, aging, dementia, and grief. The organization has served Colorado families for 50 years with clinically skilled and deeply compassionate wraparound services focused on comfort, clarity, and respect for each person's values and priorities.

TRU offers a coordinated range of care programs tailored to different stages of the journey. These include in-home care coordination to help older adults remain safely in their homes and communities through comprehensive medical and social support; a supportive home in Lafayette for people living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias; palliative care providing symptom relief and guidance for people with serious or advancing illness; and hospice care focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life in the final months of life. TRU Hospice is accredited by The Joint Commission and supported by national memberships including the National Alliance for Care at Home, the National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation, and the Center to Advance Palliative Care.

Beyond direct medical care, TRU provides grief support services including groups, counseling, and community programs for adults, teens, and children coping with loss. These services are available to the community whether or not individuals have used other TRU services. Caregivers receive education, guidance, and emotional support to help them navigate their roles.

TRU's care coordination includes home visits, phone guidance, and in-person support tailored to individual needs. Families receive practical help and clear communication about care options, with ongoing check-ins to ensure families feel informed and supported throughout their journey. Many TRU programs, including hospice and palliative care, may be covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance.

Stan, my husband, was in palliative care through TruCare the year before he passed away. We were so grateful for their support! Dr. Cade visited with us as a family, to talk about Stan's medical issues and explain their services. A nurse came to visit with him every few months and was available to answer any questions we had. When the team at TruCare found out that Stan loved dogs, they found a therapy dog to come visit.

When Stan entered hospice care, he continued with the TruCare hospice team at Longmont United Hospital. The staff and volunteers were wonderful and provided excellent care and support to our whole family.

Upon leaving the hospital my husband was offered palliative care. A nurse would come to our house to help with medical care if needed. We were told there was no charge, the care providers were volunteer.
We had a few visits over a year. The nurse would chat for a while, check my husband's vitals, and ordered a sleeping pill. That was it.
When I broke my arm and called to ask if they could help me care for my husband until I got the cast removed, I was told they couldn't do anything to help.
At that moment I told them I no longer wanted to be involved with their organization. A few months later our insurance notified us they were charged hundreds of dollars for the visits. Now, today, two years later, we got an invoice that we owe $15.00.
Guess it's not volunteer like we were led to believe. A very expensive home visit for checking vitals.
I would not recommend this company.

I just wanted to take a moment to recognize Nurse Brandy from TruCare. Yesterday was a very difficult and emotional time for the client’s son as he had just signed his mother up for services. Nurse Brandy was truly wonderful with both his mother and with him. She was calm, compassionate, and supportive, and she helped make a very hard situation feel a little easier for everyone involved. It was really nice to see the level of care and kindness she brought to the visit. I am a caregiver with HomeWell.

Catherine with palliative care and Amanda with hospice care were exceptional. Amanda, went above and beyond to care for us in an unusual circumstance. We don’t know what we would have done without her. The care, compassion and service response were excellent. We were so thankful for the overall care we received with the entire team at Tru. I highly recommend them.

A nurse will come and try to sell you their services. Don’t buy into it, you will not receive them. All you will get is a nurse that comes out 2 times a week to see how your loved one is doing. Spiritual support? Nonexistent. Emotional support? Nope, none. A social worker contacted me when my mom was transitioning on their hospice floor and I thought this is nice, I’ll finally get some support. She just wanted to make sure I signed a contract saying that I will pay $350 a day if my mom lived on the floor long enough. My two young daughters that they promised would have grief support. No one ever called or asked about them. Medication?? Well your loved one will get the painkillers etc, but well past the 4 hour window that they promise leaving your loved one to suffer longer. You will not get any explanation on how to apply or give these medications which is dangerous. If you call to speak with someone, they will take a message and you will not get a call back. There is no “team” that works with you, there is only a nurse who calls a doctor to prescribe the medications. Absolutely nothing more.

Does Medicare cover care from TRU Community Care?

Yes. Ongoing help with bathing, meals and companionship is a different service, non-medical home care, which needs no referral.
