About Tilden Memory Care & Assisted Living

Tilden Memory Care & Assisted Living is a memory care and assisted living community in Alexandria, Virginia, serving individuals who need support with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, medication, and mobility, as well as those with memory loss who benefit from a calm environment with close supervision.

The community houses only eight residents in a single-story home with no stairs, designed to feel calm, warm, and deeply personal with open common spaces and natural lighting. With this small scale, caregivers get to know each resident deeply and tailor care to their specific routines, preferences, and pace. The intimate setting helps reduce confusion, ease anxiety, and lower the risk of agitation that can occur during transitions in larger environments.

Staffing includes a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse on-site most weekdays, with all caregivers trained in dementia care techniques specific to communication, redirection, and supporting residents with memory loss. The community also partners with medical professionals, including nurse practitioners and therapists, who visit regularly. The owner is a licensed administrator, nursing aide, and Certified Dementia Practitioner closely involved in daily operations.

Residents have their own private rooms with natural lighting, smart TVs, and spacious bathrooms. Most room features and services are included in one monthly rate, simplifying budgeting for families. The community does not serve individuals at high risk of elopement, those who are violent or overly aggressive, or those requiring two-person assist for most daily tasks, though families may hire a private aide for added support.

The community emphasizes direct communication between family members and caregivers, with no corporate layers or phone trees. Family members have open access to the owner and staff who know their loved one best.

Mom lived at Tilden for a short time, but I wish I moved her in earlier. Mom lived at a corporate big box assisted living for over 3 years and as she declined she dropped below the minimal functioning point required to survive in corporate big box assisted living. Corporate big box says they have memory care but its really just the same glitz and glamor that’s sold to the children on the assisted living side except with an extra babysitter and more restrictive room accommodations. Corporate big box does not specifically change any processes or services on the memory care side to cater towards keeping the cognitively declining resident as independent as possible for as long as possible. Wade , Tilden’s owner, implements memory care techniques that he has learned from colleagues and from studies of other memory care facilities around the world to maximize what abilities each resident still has left. I removed mom from the corporate big box assisted living when she lost weight at an alarmingly fast rate in a single month. She had lost the mechanics of feeding herself, she wore a lot of her meals if she didn’t simply sleep in front of them. After I moved mom to Tilden, staff was able to get mom back up to her “semi healthy” weight in about 2 weeks. With only 8 residents and a much smaller facility , the staff has time to keep a personalized eye on each resident and is not overwhelmed. Mom regained her strength. Mom had lost the strength to get up from her chair without being lifted when I removed her from corporate big box, but she could once again stand up from a chair on her own in less than a month at Tilden. Eventually , however, moms body just gave out. It wasn’t for lack of staff trying everything they knew. It happened fast, there was simply nothing they could do. The staff was pretty broken up when mom passed even though mom had only been there a few months. The personal bond builds quickly is such a small setting. Mom only lived at Tilden a short time, but I’m glad I moved her there. If you have a parent or loved one with cognitive decline, you would be lucky to get them into Tilden.

Tilden Memory Care is in a league of its own. I first met Wade Chilcoat a few years ago, and I could immediately grasp his commitment to excellence and his passion for providing the highest level of care possible to the seniors they serve.

Tilden’s boutique approach to memory care and assisted living is something truly special. Their “why” is powerful, and you can see it reflected in everything they do.

I cannot recommend a facility of this caliber highly enough.

Tilden has been a shining light during a very difficult time. The owner and staff are truly caring and have accommodated my mom’s needs with respect and understanding. They take a wholistic approach to each individual’s physical, psychological, and spiritual needs which has made all the difference. I’m so grateful to GeriatriCare for finding this placement.

I love TILDEN concept of living at home away from home. This small boutique like, “facility” wraps the whole building with beauty and charm where residents are cared for by happy and kind professionals in health care. When you walk in the house you feel the warmth that comes with being in a close relationship of individuals that meet a certain level of peace and lovely care. Nothing would be possible without strong leadership. Wade Chilcoat keeps an eye in all details of this beautiful life at Tilden. From Memory Care to Assisted Living. Pharmacy services and personal care. Just name it, ALL is available and ready to deliver with the best possible customer service. That is Tilden a home away from home.

Tilden Memory Care has been a truly comforting place for my aunt and our entire family. The home is small and peaceful, with just eight residents, which means she receives highly personalized attention in a calm, familiar setting. The staff are incredibly kind and attentive—they know her routines, her preferences, and treat her with genuine respect. We especially appreciate the open communication and the warm, home-like atmosphere. It’s clear that the team is deeply committed to quality care, and my aunt has found a sense of safety and belonging that brings us real peace of mind.
