About The Cambridge Homes

The Cambridge Homes is an assisted living residence in Cambridge, Massachusetts, located in a historic Georgian-style building on Mount Auburn Street, just a mile from Harvard Square. The community features 44 units within a century-old structure whose exterior facade and interior architectural details, including fireplaces and detailed wood paneling, have been preserved or replicated to maintain historic character throughout.

Founded in 1887 by Cambridge citizens including Alice Longfellow (daughter of the poet), The Cambridge Homes was established to create a residence for elderly men and women. The current building opened in 1899 in a ceremony presided over by Harvard University President Charles William Eliot. An infirmary was added over time, and in 1997 the community reopened as an assisted living residence following a complete renovation that modernized the building while preserving its historic charm. A further renovation was completed in 2025.

The community is operated as a not-for-profit organization with a nine-member Board of Directors and up to 50 Incorporators dedicated to providing gracious accommodations and quality services. Residents lead independent lives while benefiting from personalized services, security, and companionship. The Cambridge Homes maintains an endowment fund to assist residents facing financial hardship, continuing the organization's original charitable mission.

The Active Friends' Committee hosts regular programming including play-reading, monthly teas, and wine and cheese socials that connect residents to the larger Cambridge community. Staff members receive training through SAGECare's LGBTQ training program to address the unique needs and identities of LGBTQ residents, reflecting the community's commitment to maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment for all members.

My father spent the last few years of his life at Cambridge Homes and I am so grateful to the wonderful staff and community there who were always so protective, warm, kind, and uplifting. We are so lucky that he was able to be part of that community.

The Cambridge Homes is an amazing assisted living residence that feels like an extended family!
There are less than 50 residents and each day brings activities of all kinds, such as live music, exercise class, play readings, outings and discussion groups. The meals are healthy and delicious, the staff is caring and professional and the environment warm and welcoming. Anyone would be lucky to live here.

My mother has been a resident at The Cambridge Homes for four years, and I cannot say enough about the extraordinary level of care, dignity, and compassion she has received there.

My mother is 84 years old, has physical limitations and cognitive decline, and also holds a doctorate in Education from Harvard. Finding a community where she would feel intellectually comfortable, emotionally supported, and genuinely respected was incredibly important to our family. The Cambridge Homes has exceeded every expectation.

What makes this community truly special is the caliber of both the residents and the staff. Surrounded by fellow Harvard, MIT, and highly accomplished academic residents, my mother continues to feel stimulated, engaged, and “at home” among peers who share similar life experiences and intellectual curiosity.

The care is deeply personalized. The staff knows her preferences, her routines, her challenges, and her strengths. They treat her with patience, warmth, and respect every single day. Their attention to detail and genuine kindness have brought enormous peace of mind to our family.

She is also a very picky eater, and the food has been consistently excellent. Meals are thoughtfully prepared, high quality, and one of the highlights of her daily life.

The activities, programming, and overall environment are truly world class. There is an atmosphere of dignity, intelligence, warmth, and community that is very rare to find in senior living.

I am profoundly grateful to everyone at The Cambridge Homes for the exceptional care they provide and for helping my mother maintain quality of life, connection, and joy during this stage of her life.

My mother lived at The Cambridge Homes for several years, and I remain deeply grateful for the care, kindness, and support she received there. From the moment she arrived, it was clear this was much more than simply an assisted living facility — it truly felt like a warm and caring community.

The staff were consistently compassionate, attentive, and respectful, not only toward my mother but toward our entire family. They took the time to know the residents personally, and it showed in the countless small acts of kindness that made such a difference day to day. The environment itself is welcoming and thoughtfully designed, creating a sense of comfort and calm.

I was also continually impressed by the leadership and overall culture of the organization. There was a genuine commitment to resident well-being, dignity, and connection that could be felt throughout the community.

As both a family member and a physician who spent decades in healthcare, I can say that the quality of care and humanity at The Cambridge Homes truly stands out. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a supportive and compassionate place for a loved one.

The Cambridge Homes is like no other senior assisted living place. Cosy, deeply charming, intimate, and warm, it feels like a large gorgeous home and not at all like an institution. Every member of staff is friendly, attentive, and caring, from the dining room to those assisting with medicine, to the management. The entertainment, exercise options, and education is fantastic and so are the trips. Lots to stimulate and amuse. The food is great. If you are looking for your self or your loved one, this is a true home where you can be assured that the experience will be warm and caring and very fun. I’m delighted my mother is a resident.
