I am actually annoyed with myself for leaving my dad here as long as I did. I will say that many of the staff members were wonderful and caring. However, our experience with the actual care was very disappointing. There were multiple occasions when my father would press his call button because he needed to use the bathroom, and an aide would tell him to simply go in his pants and they would clean him up afterward. No adult should be treated that way if they are capable of using the bathroom. Whenever I visited, he often smelled of urine, and I assumed that was just part of assisted living because I had no other experience to compare it to. Looking back, I realize it was not normal. The cost also became completely unreasonable. By the time we moved him, the monthly cost had risen to nearly $12,000. We sacrificed a tremendous amount financially to keep him there. Two years ago, when costs increased, my only affordable option was to move him into a shared room. Although the other side of the room was unused, his portion was extremely small. Once his dresser, television, and recliner were in place, there was barely any room left. He preferred having his recliner, so that became the priority. Eventually, I moved him to Tappan Zee Manor. While the food may not be quite as good, the quality of care is night and day. The cost is less than half of what we were paying, he has a large private room, and he never smells or appears unkempt. When he presses his call button because he needs the bathroom, staff respond promptly and assist him with dignity. They also provide entertainment and activities similar to what Sunrise offers. The facility may not look as fancy, but for the difference in cost and the improvement in care, there is simply no comparison. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend this facility unless you have substantial financial resources and require very little assistance. The value for the cost was simply not there for my father.

Melissa from Sunrise booked a reservation with us last week for today, Friday, May 1st at 11 AM for 10 people. At the time of booking, we expressed our concerns about taking her reservation, as we have had many negative experiences with large groups from senior living facilities booking with us and not honoring their reservations at the last minute. She assured us that would not be the case. Melissa called the tearoom on Thursday, April 30th (the day before her scheduled reservation) to confirm the reservation and inform us that only 8 guests would be attending. I was appreciative for the advanced notice and reconfirmed the time of the reservation, 11 AM. She confirmed, 8 people at 11 AM with no allergies or dietary restrictions. We also sent a confirmation text to the number on file. At 11:15 today (Friday, May 1st), nobody from the scheduled group of 8 had arrived. I called the number on file and the person who answered informed me that the group had not left the facility yet, and that they thought their reservation was for a later time. I reiterated to her that I had confirmed with Melissa the day before that 8 people were coming at 11 AM and that I would not have availability to take the reservation at a later time. She told me someone would call me back. I do not recall the name of the person who called me back, but she immediately started yelling at me when I answered the phone, hardly giving me an opportunity to even speak, and told me I was rude and had poor customer service skills and hung up on me. Nobody ever showed up for the reservation, and I wound up throwing out the food I prepared for this reservation. The seniors who rely on your services deserve better. You have left a negative impression, and we will not be doing business with this organization going forward.

We just moved a family member into Sunrise of Old Tappan, and could not be happier with how things have gone so far. Anna is phenomenal with handling the admissions process, and every staff member we've met has been friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this community.

The people who work in Memory Care are amazing. Every single one of them. Iliana the manager is an angel. A special call out to Donna who was the recreation counselor there and has since moved to another Sunrise location. She was a Godsend. She treats every person with the respect they deserve.

My father spent just over 3 years living at Sunrise in Old Tappan and since he passed just over a month ago I’ve had some time to reflect. My brothers and I didn’t see the warning signs and were taken by surprise with our Dad’s sudden cognitive decline (he hid it well). Looking back we were very fortunate to have found a place that was in the same town he lived in for 50 years and was staffed with people who truly cared for him. When you entered you were warmly greeted by Kathy (retired), Carolyn, Chris along with others. While that was nice for us, our concern was making sure our Dad was happy and stayed active. That leads me to Donna Ahern. We are forever grateful to Donna who was the entertainment coordinator at Sunrise Old Tappan for a majority of our Dad’s time there. It was a big change for him and she made it seamless. She figured out what his interests were and worked them into the daily activities like she did for all the residents. It always amazed me when I would stop in for a visit and see a room full of the residents smiling, laughing and having a great time. Donna moved to a different Sunrise location (lucky them!) in the area about a year ago, but before she left she made sure OT was in capable hands. While there were many ups during my father’s time at Sunrise OT, there were a few downs but you’re going to encounter that anywhere. If your loved one is fortunate enough to be there long enough, you are going to deal with change in staff, appearance of the facilities etc.
