My family’s experience here was very disappointing. Skip was repeatedly rude and unprofessional, on multiple occasions he never politely greeted me but instead stopped me in the foyer and publicly accused me of bringing my grandmother tobacco products which was embarrassing and completely inappropriate. What made it even more concerning was hearing staff openly express the difficulties of working there, the ongoing issues with management and the lack of compassion when it came to residents’ comfort and care.

Although there are some wonderful people working here, I would discourage anyone from placing a loved one here. The director and the director of nursing repeatedly lied to us. We walked our family member in the facility in July, and within three months she had lost the ability to stand. They put her in her wheelchair and never helped her to walk. We received a phone call from the facility one day telling us that they, " think she might have had a stroke three days ago," but no one had called the doctor.We were assured on admission that she would receive physical therapy, but that never happened. We were assured that she could live there for the rest of her life, but because we advocated for better care, we were told that she would have to move. The reason the nursing director gave was that the state wouldn't let them keep her there because she couldn't walk.

I cannot express the gratitude that I truly feel for this place and the staff. My dad was there for a little over 2 years and he is full onset dementia. The care and the respect that the staff show towards the residents is truly outstanding. Dad could be challenging at times due to his dementia, and the people here knew how to deal with the situations that would arise and be able to provide comfort and care when the world was just too confusing for dad to understand. I would highly recommend Clover Hill in Maryville for anyone that is faced with the challenges of caring for a loved one as they progress thru the stages of this horrible disease. Scott Bassett

This has been a godsend. They have lots of activities throughout the day. They also offer day trips several times a week. There are trips for those with milder dementia and different trips for those with greater mobility issues who may not be able to get off the bus as easily. It’s misleading when you tour the facility because you may see some residents who look quite advanced in cognitive decline- but they are out there to help stimulate them instead just sitting in their room all day. The higher functioning residents may be in their room and then come out for activities later. Just go on their Facebook page to see pictures of all the activities they get to do. Since it is one building, there seems to be a good amount of varied staff throughout the day.

My mother was at Clover Hill for about 5 weeks. Clover Hill is primarily a memory care facility, with dementia patients housed and socialized in the same areas as non-dementia patients. This can be distressing for residents when the dementia patients are crying and/or yelling. My mother, who did not have dementia, commented that she felt so sad for those poor patients that she couldn’t do anything to help. I think this is a poor model for care, as it is hard enough for elderly residents to move from their homes without having to move into a stressful environment. Most of the time when calling the facility we got voicemail, which was frustrating. There was an inexcusable medication lapse (thankfully caught by my mother) causing Mom to miss a daily eye medication for about 3 weeks. This unfortunately resulted in worsening of her glaucoma, further sensitivity to light and additional loss of vision. When the manager tried to help Mom meet other non-dementia residents (which was commendable), he didn’t understand that with her worsening glaucoma, she couldn’t tolerate the light near the window in the dining room. This was reported to me as “she doesn’t want to sit with certain people” or “she refuses to sit anywhere else.” This made no sense to me because my Mom was easy-going, and friendly to everyone - I later realized what was going on with her extreme sensitivity to light. On the positive side, Mom reported that the nursing staff were kind and attentive and we were happy with the nurse practitioner who made weekly visits. The activities director went out of her way to help my mother connect with my special needs brother. Overall, although we experienced some positives, I would not recommend Clover Hill for people who do not have dementia.
