Sanford Home

Sarah Jane Sanford Home is an independent living community for women in Amsterdam, New York. Established in 1896 and officially opened in 1904, the home serves ambulatory women aged 65 and older with a current resident capacity of 40. The community operates as a not-for-profit organization and is inspected and licensed as an adult home by the New York State Department of Health.

The home comprises two wings: the Century House with 28 private rooms featuring special bathrooms, and Sanford Hall with 12 private rooms each with private baths and wireless internet service. All rooms are equipped with call systems, telephone, and cable TV. The facility is staffed around the clock with a professional administrator and administrative staff available 24 hours daily to provide personal assistance and emergency care.

Common areas include two living rooms, sitting areas on each floor, and three sunny solariums where residents can relax together. In summer, residents have access to spacious outdoor porches. Meals are individually plated and served in the dining room by dietary staff under the supervision of a registered dietician.

The Social Committee and staff organize various programs and activities throughout the year, including birthday and holiday parties, educational speakers, music programs, and entertainment, as well as outings such as apple picking, fall foliage rides, restaurant luncheons, and visits to community events like the Festival of Trees.

The original residence maintains Victorian-era charm with comfortable furniture, antiques, fresh flowers, and seasonal decorations. A 2007 expansion project added a new wing with modern amenities including a contemporary kitchen, beauty shop, and additional resident rooms, updating the century-old building while preserving its character.
