About Martha Jefferson House

Martha Jefferson House is an independent living, assisted living, and long-term nursing care community located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Founded in 1957 by local philanthropist Hunter Carlyle Perry, this non-profit senior living community is centered around an elegant 1921 Georgian-style brick mansion situated at the end of a private cul-de-sac near the University of Virginia.

The community offers a range of living arrangements to suit different needs. Independent living residents choose from spacious one and two-bedroom apartments in the Perry Wing with modern kitchens, charming suite apartments original to the 1921 mansion with unique historical features, or cozy studio and suite apartments in Hunter's Way. Assisted living accommodations feature exclusive options that preserve the community's historic character. Long-term nursing care includes 24 private rooms and 2 semi-private rooms staffed by licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, and a Medical Director.

Brookwood Therapeutic Services operates on-site and provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to both residents and the outpatient community. Physical therapy focuses on restoring movement and function, occupational therapy helps residents maintain independence in daily activities, and speech therapy addresses communication and swallowing concerns.

The Martha Jefferson House neighborhood offers rich cultural access, with shops, parks, museums, theaters, and the Gordon Avenue Library nearby. As a private, boutique community, Martha Jefferson House employs a person-centered care plan that recognizes and respects the individuality of each resident.

Martha Jefferson House is more than I ever thought a nursing home could be. They did more than just take care of my dad; they became a second family to him. You can pay somebody to take care of you, but you can’t pay them to love you— that has to come from their hearts. And it did. This remarkable organization and its remarkable staff made my dad feel safe, respected, and cared for during the last few years of his life. They gave him an invaluable gift. And I will forever be in their debt. If anybody out there is wondering which nursing home would be best to care for their aging parents, I highly recommend you check out this very special place. I can’t imagine any other nursing home coming close to MJH. ❤️

I am currently a patient at the Martha Jefferson House.
Exceptional is the only word to describe the Martha Jefferson House in Charlottesville, Virginia.
And that word applies to everything about it: the nurses; the administrative staff; the activities for residents; even the food!
MJH consists of 4 separate living facilities that are joined and offer a wide variety of options for assisted living. These include separate 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and suites, some come with kitchenettes or full kitchens, washers and dryers, heated bathroom floors and outdoor terraces.
Some include 1, or 3 (depending on which facility you occupy) freshly prepared meals per day prepared by an outstanding food service staff with a variety of selections for each meal.
One of the facilities offers residents independent living plus assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) for those who don't require nursing care.
The fourth building is for intermediate nursing care for residents who require nursing care around the clock, seven days per week.
With a proper doctor's referral, MJH offers all residents physical and occupational therapy 5 days per week from a well trained, professional staff. The small gym also welcomes non-residents from the local community, with that same referral.
There is a daily list of activities available to all residents: board games; music performances by local artists; bingo; trivia; exercise and meditation classes; tai chi; trips into the community; and many more. Accomodations have been made so that even residents confined to a wheelchair can participate in almost all of them. There's even a wine and cheese hour on Friday evenings.
All of the staff from the Director down to the housekeepers and maintenance personnel are friendly, happy, upbeat and bend over backwards to accommodate any reasonable request.
A Doctor and Nurse Practitioner visit residents needing around the clock nursing care 2 days each week and are on call all other times.
The food offes a great variety with at least 2 choices for every meal. The food is well prepared and seasoned. It is definitely not typical institutional food. More impressive is the fact that their in house food service staff will make every effort to satisfy your individual requests. Most of the food is restaurant quality.
This is a well run, efficient, welcoming, pleasant facility perfect for senior citizens and those you love. It's truly a home away from home.
