My father has lived at Lockwood for about a month now, and I researched places in the area when his need to move arose. Lockwood is a beautiful, new (<2 years old as I write this) facility with lots to recommend it.

As an independent living building, the overall environment is bright, open, and modern unlike many assisted living places that have a more institutional feel. The apartments have 9-foot ceilings and plenty of light from sliding doors and large windows. The kitchens are modern with a good array of safety features (e.g. burners that turn off when you lift a pan from them, in case somebody forgets to turn the knob completely).

Having eaten a couple of meals there myself, I would say the food is above average. It won't knock Bobby Flay off the Food Network, but it is better than most similar places I have been. And the flexibility of the menu is excellent, with dozens of standbys that residents can choose to have if they don't like the day's offering.

Outside the apartment and food, there is plenty to do. The community garden is well appointed. Sitting and walking areas outside are very pleasant. The exercise and movie rooms are quite nice, and the twice-weekly happy hour in the bistro is a wonderful added touch that promotes social interaction.

Another nice thing about Lockwood is its location. I counted at least 3 bus lines that run past the front of the facility, with a stop just steps away from the front door. That makes it convenient to public transportation in addition to the ample resident parking for those who drive.

Finally, I have found the staff to be helpful and responsive. If I had one niggle to complain about, it would be that the front desk is not staffed on weekends. But overall the folks in the dining area have been very nice and helpful, the front desk quite informative, and I should note that there are even companies that visit for in-home physical therapy and healthcare, all of which have been excellent thus far.

So it is early days for me regarding my dad's experience there, but I am quite pleased with the place and it has certainly eased my mind to have him living there.
