About Golden LivingCenter - Valparaiso

Golden LivingCenter - Valparaiso is an assisted living and skilled nursing facility in Valparaiso, Indiana, serving residents who need long-term care or short-term rehabilitation. It is a smaller community, with a Google rating of 2.9 out of 5 stars based on 22 reviews.

Family experiences at this facility are sharply divided. Some families describe deeply attentive care, noting that staff maintained cleanliness, provided fresh clothing daily, and showed genuine emotional investment in residents' wellbeing—one family wrote, "some of the staff cried when he passed." These families praised the director and staff across nursing, dietary, maintenance, and social services for their kindness and responsiveness, particularly with residents facing complex medical or behavioral needs. However, other families report serious concerns about basic care standards, including inadequate staffing ratios (described as one nurse to 24 patients), gaps in specialized medical knowledge, and instances of residents left in soiled conditions for extended periods, with visible odors in rooms.

The facility appears to deliver inconsistent standards of care, with strength in emotional support and cleanliness management in some cases, but documented failures in hygiene, nursing competency, and supervision in others. Prospective residents and families should ask specifically about staffing levels, staff training in specialized care (such as tracheostomy management), and incontinence protocols before admission.

After my brother was diagnosed with glioblastoma we got him into Golden Living Valpairso along with hospice. He lived for another 11 months which no one expected. It was very obvious they cared for him—some of the staff cried when he passed. His daughter and I knew we could trust them to take good care of him--always clean and a different change of clothes every day. They appreciated that we visited him and responded to their requests, like he needed winter shoes. We consider ourselves very fortunate that we were able to place him there. I wish everyone could have the experience we did.

Insurance tried to send my mom here for 2 weeks. First, she had a tracheostomy that the nurse had no idea how to suction. She had to call her boss to come in and show her. The nurse ratio was one nurse to 24 patients. And they expected my mom, who needed to use a walker, to drag a 50lb oxygen tank on wheels with her when she needed to use the bathroom. Have they never used a concentrator?! After the nurse missed giving my mom her afternoon and evening medications we called a transport ambulance and arranged to care for my mom at home. At least she would get her meds on time, make it to the toilet, and get her trach suctioned when it needed to be. I was better able to care for her as a lay person than this place was.

I love this nursing home I have been involved in ministry for 10 or 12 years in nursing homes.... And now, my husband suffered a severe stroke at a very young age and was in a nursing home. This is a small nursing home but it's wonderful. My husband has a lot of behavioral issues and they have been so good with him. The director, Jen, has been so good and needs my husband right where he needs to be met at. When I read bad reviews it makes me feel sad because I don't think people realize what up wonderful facility this is. I would recommend this highly

My mother, Barbara H. was a resident at Golden Living, Valparaiso, IN until she passed a few weeks ago. All staff were fantastic! I can't say enough about the excellent care she received. In addition all staff (nursing, dietary, maintenance, social services, PT, administration) were so kind to her and my family. The facility was always clean and neat. The staff truly cared about our mom! Thank you to Golden Living, Valparaiso, IN for being a supportive and compassionate part of her life. Sarah P. - daughter

Because I had to click a star to write a review, this is the only reason they got one from me and my family. My mother visits my Grandmother 2-3 times a week and in almost every visit my Grandmother is soaking wet down to her bed to her socks. It reeks of urine. You can smell it from the doorway of her room. They are not helping changing her. This and very personal recent event I cannot write about at this time. I am working on getting her out of this home. I would suggest you all do the same. I feel very strongly that my loved one is not being properly cared for. 😠😔
