Deering Pavilion

Deering Pavilion is an independent living residence for persons 62 years and older, or those with physical handicaps, located in Portland, Maine. The community is a 200-unit, 11-story building owned by the Catholic Diocese and managed by the Diocesan Bureau of Housing as a HUD Section 8 subsidized facility.

The residence offers studio and one-bedroom apartments with bright, open floor plans, large closets, and emergency pull cords in bathrooms and living areas. Units feature large windows with panoramic views of forest, ocean, mountains, or city skyline. The building includes family-style dining, a convenience store, laundry facilities, a library with computers, a beauty salon, a media room with large-screen television, and a recreation room with crafting tables, seating, and a pool table. Each residential floor offers two community rooms to promote neighborhood living, and 23 common areas are distributed throughout the building.

The seven-acre wooded grounds at 880 Forest Avenue provide landscaped and lighted walking paths and gardens, with spacious parking for residents and guests. The location sits minutes from downtown Portland, positioning residents close to the city's amenities while maintaining a quiet, oasis-like setting.

Rent is based on 30 percent of a resident's income and includes all utilities: heat, hot water, electricity, air conditioning, and internet access. Tenancy is open to persons 62 years or older, or those who are handicapped, who meet HUD income guidelines. Since 1973, the Diocesan Bureau of Housing has worked with HUD to provide affordable housing for Maine's elderly regardless of faith.
