I visited my 74-year-old friend here last week. This place is just okay, because sometimes they put 3 people to a room. What makes it awesome is the staff - everyone from the nurses, doctors, the CNA's, and the chef (makes the food himself!) Like, there's GOURMET FOOD here for the patients, and they get a choice between a couple of items! The chef goes to each patient individually, and asks what they want for lunch/dinner, and he even knows most of their names.

My mother is 98 years old and suffers from dementia. Recently, she fell from her bed and broke her nose. She was placed in the hospital for a few days to recover. Upon returning to Brandon Woods, the staff was instructed to place pads around her bed to prevent further injury. Initially, the pads were placed and her bed alarmed. I visited today to find no pads , all required safety measures not in place. The care provided is inconsistent. I received some defensive push back when the nurse in charge was questioned. This establishment needs to step it up. Especially after the recent reviews and inspections.

Do NOT put your family member here! The list goes on all the way up to the Director. We are avidly trying to get my grandmother transferred out of here to another nursing home and they have refused to complete and submit requested documentation necessary for the transfer! Even my grandmother’s attorney has requested separate documentation necessary for our court date for conservatorship and we now have to file for a continuance because of this facility’s negligence! The attorney reaches out to them every two days for the same med cert and they even indicated it was “lost.” This facility is dirty, any good staff they have are overworked, other staff just don’t care! When I have shown up unannounced they literally just have all of the patients lined up in chairs—each of them attached to the chair with a physical restraint! My grandmother was in the hospital for 3 months without any injuries or falls—after seven days, we received a call for a possible broken arm! They had her drugged with antipsychotics to the point where she wasn’t eating or drinking and was non-responsive. I requested all antipsychotics to be stopped immediately as they were never authorized! They are required to have the physicians sign off on physical and chemical restraints, yet the doctor was not available to sign her necessary paperwork for Mass Health. How is it that a medical physician is signing off on restraint use, but isn’t available for a signature on Mass Health docs. When you raise concerns, they are defiant and aggressive with you and try to say that it is me who is being unreasonable here. The other reviews here are legitimate regardless of the pacifying responses you see on these reviews. If you love your family member, don’t do them a disservice by sending them here. They deserve so much more in the latter portion of their lives! I’m so upset and I feel like I just can’t get her out of here because they’re refusing to provide the requested documents necessary for the transfer! This place should absolutely be shut down. If you don’t take my word for it, do an internet search on this establishment and the incidents that have occurred here. It has had more documented incidents than 99% of nursing homes IN THE COUNTRY! Yet, it’s still open! Someone please tell me how!

My mom has been under BW of New Bedford care for 3 years. At 96, dementia has progressed and she needs much assistance as this devastating disease has taken its toll. The staff has been wonderful and caring. She is treated with dignity and respect. Our family could never have kept her safe at home, given the lack of resources for home care. We are grateful since there is a lack of local places offering similar services….allowing us to visit often.

It is a horrible place and their practice of sedating patients needs to be investigated by the government. Nearly everyone there is on sedatives. They gave my father 400mg of Trazadone every day (the maximum legal dose), and other sedative medications as well. My father was not depressed and there was no reason to give him antidepressants other than to sedate him. My father had a stroke and was sent there by St. Luke's Hospital for his recovery. Although he had recovered from his stroke, he was held there against his will for months. It was not specifically the management's fault he was held there, but they violated their ethical obligation to ensure his discharge once it was apparent he had recovered. They should have insisted that he not be held there against his will. They do not have an outside courtyard or exercise facilities. A+ for the staff, though. They were very friendly and did seem to care about the patients. The food looked pretty good. The facility was outdated, but clean. I have the impression that very few patients ever leave there. I believe is it mainly not a recovery facility and it is mostly a place were people go to be sedated and warehoused until they die. I hate to write bad reviews, and I did really like the staff, but I believe what they are doing is unethical, and probably illegal. The patients are medicated to a point of slurring their speech and moving around like zombies. There is no quality of life there. It is like a prison for the elderly and feeble minded. Brandon Woods New Bedford is a horrible place. I have tried to be fair, but honest in this review.
