If I could give negative stars I would. This place mentally abuses their residents.. when you call to check on them for days and they keep telling you (without checking) that the resident is not there… the manager won’t call back because she knows that I know about them mentally abusing the people in there. This place is awful! Do not send your elderly people here!!!!!

Horrible place!! They aren’t nice to the residents, and make them feel like they’re not worth their time. Trying to talk to someone in charge is next to impossible. Ever since they changed from Bon Secour to Adventura Bay it has dramatically gone downhill!! Don’t put your loved ones on here!!!

Unlawful eviction of twelve year resident.

SUMMARY

My mother, 89, was unlawfully evicted from Aventura Bay Place assisted living facility in 2021. She had lived there 12 years. The eviction was unlawful because my mother was not given 45 day advance notice of eviction as required by Florida state law. There was no physician certification that relocation was necessary. My mother was not harmful or offensive to other residents. The history of events relating to my mother's eviction are provided here.

HISTORY OF EVENTS

My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in her mid seventies and has had slowly advancing dementia since. In 2009 at age of 77 my mother moved to Aventura Bay Place assisted living where she lived for the next 12 years. In January 2021 my mother contracted COVID-19. She spent one week in hospital followed by two weeks in temporary COVID-19 quarantine. Prior to her bout with COVID-19, my mother could stand and walk independently. After COVID-19 she was in good general health but the infection decreased her strength and mobility and she now required a wheelchair in general. When helped to her feet she could support her own weight and walk short distances with two-person assistance. In the months following her COVID-19 bout my mother received daily walking exercise assisted by Aventura Bay Place caregivers, independent paid companions, and myself.

On December 23, 2021, the Aventura Bay Place director of nursing told me that my mother had to leave immediately because she did not meet the criteria for residents to be able to "stand and pivot on their own" and "transfer themselves independently." This was the first time I was informed by Aventura Bay Place that my mother was being evicted. I tried to contact the director of Aventura Bay Place but my messages were not returned. I asked the director of nursing why my mother was not given 45 days advance notice of eviction as required by Florida state law. The director of nursing said there had been a "sudden change" in my mother's mobility and that "two weeks ago my mother was standing and dancing unassisted" but now she is unable to stand unassisted. Even if this claim were true, it did not exempt Aventura Bay Place from the 45 day advance notice of eviction because no physician had been involved and there was no certification that emergency relocation was necessary. Furthermore, the claim that my mother's mobility had changed recently was not true. I had been visiting my mother two hours every day for the previous five months (since August) and my mother's independent paid companion had been visiting her three hours per day five days per week for the past six years. We both confirmed first hand from daily walking exercises that there had been no change in my mother's mobility over the previous 11 months since her bout with COVID-19. This was further corroborated by Aventura Bay Place caregivers that worked daily with my mother.

When I reached the director of Aventura Bay Place to discuss my mother's eviction I asked why she was not being given 45 days advance notice of eviction as required by Florida law. I explained there was no physician certification requiring emergency relocation and that my mother was not harmful to or harassing other residents. I also explained that multiple sources could confirm there had been no change in my mother's mobility or general health over the previous 11 months since her bout with COVID-19. The director only reiterated that my mother no longer met the mobility criteria for residents and would be evicted in 24 hours.

At this stage rather than continue protest on my mother's behalf I decided it was better to find alternative long-term care for my mother. We found a new assisted living facility that had no problem accepting my mother with her existing mobility.

CONCLUSION

For most of the 12 years living at Aventura Bay Place my mother received competent and compassionate care. Unfortunately, one decisive and unlawful action by the administration resulted in extreme hardship. I cannot recommend Aventura Bay Place.

It’s a very nice facility. The best that I know about in Pinellas County. What makes this place so special is that the employees seem to genuinely care about the residents. They see my mom as a human being when other places have not. The set up is nice too. There are mini-communities within the building so it isn’t scary or overwhelming to residents.
