I cannot say enough good things about Astral at Auburn. My mother has been a resident there for several months now, and the difference in her is truly remarkable. Before she came to Astral she had some health issues that the doctor said would never get better... in fact, would only get worse. But those issues have gotten so much better that Mom is back to the way she was when she was much younger. I credit the staff and programs at Astral for the change!

The activity program is outstanding. There’s truly something for everyone — a beautiful theater (popcorn anyone!), regular bingo, live music, crafts, mental stimulation programs, gentle physical exercise classes and much more. The variety keeps Mom engaged and happy. She can choose to attend the activities or not, but she always chooses to join in. There is also a walking path and lovely gazebo outside for summer walks with family and friends.

Her meals are balanced and well-prepared, and she says they are "delicious". She looks healthier, has more energy, and actually looks forward to mealtime. I joined her for lunch and the entire experience was very enjoyable. The dining area is super clean and bright, and the servers (yes, they take her food order and deliver it right to her table!) were better than most 5-star restaurants.

What truly sets Astral apart is the staff and leadership. From the caregivers to the director, everyone is genuinely caring, professional, and attentive. Everyone calls Mom by name, and they treat her with the utmost respect and kindness. Mom says she is "100% happy" at Astral and I feel completely at peace knowing she’s in such good hands.

If you’re looking for a place where your loved one will be well-fed, well-cared for, and genuinely happy, I highly recommend Astral at Auburn. We are so grateful we found them.

Recent observations, specifically within the Memory Care Unit, indicate a systemic failure to meet basic standards of care and resident dignity.

I. Clinical Safety and Nursing Oversight

The facility is currently operating under what appears to be an unsafe staffing. On a recent evening visit:

Absence of Nursing Staff: There was no licensed nurse present in the building. While QMAs provide valuable support, they require licensed nursing supervision to ensure resident safety and clinical compliance.

Emergency Response & Supervision: The lack of professional oversight has created an environment where residents enter each other's rooms and remove personal property without staff intervention. This lack of supervision poses a high risk for elopement or resident-to-resident altercations.

II. Biohazardous Conditions and Environmental Neglect

The sanitation standards in the Memory Care unit are unacceptable and contribute to a pervasive foul odor and infection risk:

Sanitation Failures: Large puddles (suspected urine) remained on the dining room floor for the duration of a meal service, despite staff being notified. This created both a biohazard and a significant fall risk.

Inadequate Housekeeping: Resident rooms and bathrooms are reportedly cleaned only once per week, and bed linens are not changed on a consistent schedule. This frequency is insufficient for a Memory Care environment.

III. Resident Rights and Dignity Violations

I observed several instances where staff behavior was not only unprofessional but bordered on neglectful and abusive:

Hygiene Neglect: A resident was permitted to sit for a meal while visibly soiled with feces. When the issue was identified, staff instructed the resident to remain in the dining hall rather than providing immediate hygiene assistance.

Verbal Misconduct: A staff member was observed screaming at an anxious resident from across the room, demanding they "be quiet." Such interactions suggest a hostile environment and a lack of training in dementia-certified communication.

Nutritional Deficiencies: Residents were served substandard meals (including undercooked food and dry greens without dressing) and were denied basic silverware until a fourth request was made.

IV. Administrative Malfeasance

These issues are symptomatic of a broader failure by the Executive Director and in-house administration. Over the past eight months, there has been a documented pattern of "lip service" with no follow-through. Management frequently acknowledges problems but fails to implement corrective actions or hold staff accountable. The "pass the buck" culture starts at the top and is directly resulting in resident suffering.

Hesitant to leave reviews due to the fact that they called me to ask if I knew the individual that left a 1 star review that spoke truths about the facility that were damaging. Two reviews left by family members have been removed as well as one currently still posted they have responded that a person has been speaking with the family that we have never heard of… this also speaks about the integrity of this facility. We will continue to make sure people are aware of what happens behind closed doors of this facility. When you tour it is beautiful, and they know all of the residents names and it’s truly amazing…. Until you sign the lease. What lies ahead for your family member is not pleasant. Our mother sat in urine which created a rash down to her knees up to her back, a UTI infection that was so severe that we had her transported by EMS. We had walked in to her being verbally abused by staff, and we had also been asked by other medical staff if she had been abused because she was acting as if she had been . I myself witnessed staff talking to her inappropriate manner and will tell you some of these people are not trained to handle the needs of these individuals nor do they want to. The Dr. in the ER also asked who was medicating her because she was over medicated. My mother did not get bathed nor did they clean her room. I took my swiffer and my Lysol wipes and cleaned her room weekly. We had to get Hospice to come in to make sure she was being bathed and to oversee her medications.I used their online method of communication to let them know of issues with her or her room regularly with no responses. The communication in this facility is horrible. Due to the UTI and inconsistencies with her medications she had aggressive behaviors that Astral put on her records, making it difficult for us to move her to another facility because she was looked at as a liability. Our mother was a beautiful, kind, respectful, proud women that deserved better and this facility failed her. I feel it it my obligation to make sure that no one else subjects their family member to this kind of treatment. They are simply trying to fill their rooms- they are not interested in the care of your loved one.
