My mother is staying at Alpine until a bed opens up elsewhere for long term care. Upon our arrival on Monday, August 3, we were taken to her room with 3 other women. The temperature in the room was unbearable. I saw a mini split AC unit on the wall but was told it was broken. The window was open and the fan was pumping humid hot air INTO the room, and the portable ac that they rigged up with the hose to the ceiling, was on but the house on the back was completely disconnected from the unit. I asked a roomate about the AC and she said it had been broken for a week. A WEEK!? The temperature in the room was near 90 and it was the most humid day all summer. I tried to fix the ac unit by reattaching the hose. The maintenance man, John, eventually came by with some tape to fix it. The room still stayed over 83 degrees as of 5:25 pm. He also added a handle to the nightstand as it was missing and you couldn't open the drawer. Note that there are items in my mom's closet that we found upon arrival. The next day I go to visit, the hose is connected to the ac but it's still so hot in there. Over 81 degrees. This morning I went to visit. What do you know? The hose is completely disconnected from the AC unit pumping SUPER hot air into the room. It was 81 degrees in there, with the outside temp in the SIXTIES. I spent about 10 minutes trying to fix the hose and finally go it connected. I had to put a bag of my mom's belongings in front of the ac unit to keep the hose in place. Ridiculous! The director of nursing came in and reassured me the ac unit would be checked and that the window in the room would remain closed. Last night, my mom felt terrible in the night. Her legs started twitching uncontrollably and then her upper body. She has epilepsy and was concerned about having a seizure. She rang the nurse and after many attempts to go to the ER, she finally had to convince the nurse to send her. Her upper body was twitching uncontrollably in the ambulance. While nothing serious was found, she was still concerned for her health. She was then sent back to Alpine and was resting when I saw her this am. In addition, we've asked to see a food menu as my mom is particular about a lot of foods. No one can seem to produce a food menu so that I can help her pick out her meals. She is vision impaired and cannot see to choose her own meals. Day 3. Still no menu to choose from. Went to get some fresh air out front with my mom, and the smoke billowing from the residents smoking under the pergola was absolutely disgusting. This place is run down and dirty. The staff seem to be wonderful but the facility itself is in MAJOR need of rehab and needs to be cleaned more often. Dressers and night stands are old and outdated and scratched up, walls are missing paint. This place should be shut down for unsanitary conditions. I am getting my mom the heck out of there today!
