How families pay for skilled nursing in Pennsylvania

Most families in Pennsylvania start by paying privately for assisted living, memory care and independent living, drawing on savings, pensions, Social Security and often the proceeds from selling a home. Long-term care insurance, where a policy was purchased years earlier, can offset part of the monthly cost as well, though families still need to confirm what the policy actually covers and for how long. Veterans and surviving spouses may also qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, a benefit that helps with the cost of care and is worth exploring early, since the application process can take some time.
