Caring for an elderly disabled parent with dementia isn't easy, and after about a year sharing our home with my Dad, and trying to help him, we decided it was far safer for him to be in a more closely supervised and monitored environment, with nurses available to address his health issues. This is an older feeling facility, but I think they do their best at keeping it clean and updated, especially considering it's a home to so many who are unable to really clean up after themselves. Whenever we visit, someone somewhere is tidying up or cleaning, and the decorations change seasonally. All the members of staff who we interact and engage with regularly are welcoming and caring, starting with the wonderful receptionists who have the ability to make everyone smile and feel at home. I'm sure if my Dad was in a better state, he would enjoy and participate in all the events that are organized for the veterans. We were hoping he might, but we've accepted now that he isn't in the right condition to socialize and make new friends. I completely acknowledge that my Dad can be difficult, so the staff who work closely with him have my complete admiration and respect, as I wouldn't want their job. I tried for about a year to help him, and hit my personal limit. You need to have a high level of patience to help someone like my Dad, and I certainly don't have enough of it. It's also just plain hard to see my Dad the way he is today, so it could be easier to work with him if you didn't know who he used to be, and how greatly he's changed. Overall, I'm very grateful for this facility and the people who work there. In addition to the smiling faces at the front desk, I'm thankful for the efforts of Staci, Tamara, Bernadette, and Debra. They have all been quite accommodating and understanding of my Dad and his various requests and unique verbose language. I would recommend the Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons, because even if there are a few misses when it comes to facilities, food, or difficult personalities, these people have a difficult job that many others wouldn't choose to do.

It's sad that the government forces our disabled military veterans to live in facilities like this. There are some great employees and they are, to the best of my knowledge, treating my family member with care and respect. However, this place is old and the cracks are showing and this facility is in desperate need of a complete refurbishment. There are smells that are sickening throughout the administrative offices. A renovating and some funding for flowers in the garden and activities more frequently than once a week would really benefit the quality of life for the hundreds of veterans who live in homes like this across the country. And the food sucks.

A friend of mine had been in this facility for a few months and I was very skeptical. I live on the east coast so I decided to go and visit him. From the time I walked through the front door I was pleasantly surprised. I was greeted by LaShawn Williams(front desk). She was very pleasant and made me feel that my friend was at the right facility, what a caring person. As I walked through the facility to get to the second floor everyone was so friendly and very personable. I was there everyday for a week and my opinion is my friend is being well taken care of. Thank you….awesomeness!!

I can honestly say that the staff has bent over backwards for my father. He came in January 2024 and it’s been an adjustment for him however the staff is willing to get him whatever he has requested. He lived at a senior living facility prior to to this & his major complaint was the food & lack of staff to get them their meals within an hour of sitting, here the dietary staff greets him on the way in the door. Yes the unit could be updated & painted but it’s much cleaner than several other SNF’s that we looked at. This is my reason for a 4 star review. I would highly recommend The VA Living Center at Fitzsimons if you want high quality care for your loved one.

I honestly cannot say enough great things about the memory care staff. My father is in the process of passing. He has been here for 2 years. He calls them family. They have so many stories and memories that they have shared with my father. He has had his skin, and teeth and health looked after so well. As a CNA who has worked hospice and memory care and behavioral health, I couldn't have asked for better people nor a better place for my father to spend his last days. They have gone above and beyond. The therapist, the social worker, the nurses and cnas. They have treated my mother with the utmost kindness and empathy. They allow her to still care for my dad, within her capabilities, so she can still feel close. I and my family are forever grateful for the love and compassion you have shown my father and us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
