The Mooring on Foreside is a specialized memory care–focused assisted living community located in Cumberland Foreside, Maine, serving residents living with dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and other forms of progressive memory loss. Situated in a peaceful wooded setting minutes from Yarmouth and Falmouth, the community is easily accessible to greater Portland and Southern Maine.
The facility is purpose-designed around best practices in memory care, with every aspect tailored to the needs of residents facing progressive memory loss. The community reflects a homelike setting featuring a traditional New England cape with a larger structure extending behind it, frontage on a landscaped backyard with trails and forest views, and intimate yet spacious common areas. Each resident has a private living space enhanced with personal furniture and belongings, and community spaces include an open family kitchen adjacent to the dining area and a comfortable living room with abundant natural light and outdoor access.
Programming is personalized and meaningful, with a recreational therapist working to provide activities that draw on familiarity and reinforce a sense of relevance. The Mooring encourages family input and tailors each resident's schedule to personal preferences, including access to events of special significance. All meals are prepared in-house in the open kitchen, and the community maintains high staff-to-resident ratios and emphasizes continuity of care through long-term staff retention.
Every staff member at The Mooring earns full certification as a Dementia Care Practitioner and receives training in Teepa Snow's Positive Approach to Care curriculum, a person-centered philosophy emphasizing dignity and individuality. Leadership includes a memory care administrator with 15 years of experience in dementia care and training in Applied Behavior Analysis. The community also has a resident dog, Deke, who is part of the team.
The facility was developed over a decade by an experienced team of memory care consultants and designed by Gawron Turgeon, known for senior housing design work. The design deliberately reflects residential familiarity while incorporating state-of-the-art safety and support features, with the facility's twelve-bed size allowing for a home-like rather than institutional approach.
