My wife has been a resident at the Hermitage for over two years. She has Alzheimer’s and is getting into late stages.
She has been on the assisted living side as well as the memory care side where she is now.
After all that time I do not, and have not, had any complaints.
In my opinion the staff here at all levels is very good. Some are even exceptional. They care about the residents and that is very important.

The Hermitage is my Wifes new home, and home it is. Staff treats everyone like family and it is obvious they care to be kind and willing to assist those that require their help. Their Memory Care unit is Top Notch with special training for those we entrust our loved ones care and future to. Residents are happy, respected by the staff, and enjoy their fellowship together, especially at gatherings, meals and special programs.
Frank Royce, Sylva resident

Great staff. My mother liked the freedom she was allowed that was not possible at home. It was a tough decision to transition her from her home to a care facility. We realized that her health would continue to decline and that she would continue to fall and have accidents as her condition progressed. At The Hermitage, we knew that there was always a caregiver close by to respond to her needs day and night. My wife directed an 80+ bed memory care unit early in her career and later consulted for the Alzheimer's Association. She was impressed with both the staff of the Hermitage as well as the Four Seasons Hospice team that cared for my mother.

Moved my father, who has Alzheimer's into this facility a couple of months ago from a place that wasn't tending carefully enough to his health. They have been friendly and responsive at all points--during planning, move-in, and getting my dad fixed up with the medical care he needed. It is easy to reach someone on the phone or to drop by and get help. They have gotten some tough feedback in the past, and it is clear they have gone to great pains to address it and keep the environment pleasant and safe. UPDATE: my father's health declined, and the team at the Hermitage, especially David, helped set up hospice for him. Everyone was kind and gentle up until his passing, and when he did go, they packed up all his things for us and terminated billing immediately and with no hassle. I didn't even need to call. Their system is thoughtfully orchestrated to provide simplicity, when a family is in grief.

For some individuals and families there may be some health care faculties that do not compare favorable with home sweet home. However, in some instances a health care facility such as a skilled, intermediate, assisted living, or memory care is the only alternative for providing the care needed by the loved one.
In todays market the cost for sitters who come to the home can range between $20 and $43 per hour. If your are fortunate to locate sitters for $30 per hour, the cost for a 24 hour shift would be $720. One week would cost $5,040 and a month would cost $21,168.
The Hermitage has staffing levels that must meet state mandated requirements for the number of residents served. Meals must meet nutritional requirements also mandated by the state.
Employees have training to meet the needs of all residents and there are many programs available which benefit residents.
No, the Hermitage is not like home, but it is a very good facility to be considered when it is not possible to care for a loved one at home.
Jack Calloway
Highlands
