The Cottages is a memory care community in Cedar Falls, Iowa, offering specialized nursing care for people with dementia. Iowa's first freestanding small house nursing home for memory care, The Cottages consists of two cottages at the South campus, each home to 16 residents.
The community operates as a family-style home in a typical neighborhood setting. Each resident has a private bedroom with an attached bathroom, creating personal space within a small group environment with consistent caregivers. The design emphasizes a household model of care that supports daily living and stronger connections between residents and staff members.
The cottage environment features comfortable gathering spaces for dining, games, television, music, reading, and relaxation. An open kitchen with skylights encourages residents to participate in preparing family-style meals. The physical design prioritizes acoustics and natural lighting to create a calming, peaceful atmosphere. An enclosed courtyard provides a safe outdoor space for residents and caregivers.
As dementia progresses into mid- to late-stage, nursing care is provided within the same household model, allowing personalized care to be delivered while maintaining the comfortable, home-like environment.
