We would like to share our heartfelt experience with The Arbors at Hauppauge and especially thank Ana Reano, Director of Community Outreach, from the bottom of our hearts.

Ana was absolutely wonderful throughout the entire process. Her patience, kindness, compassion, and the gentle way she approached our mom during the tour were truly exceptional. She genuinely cared about Mom’s well-being and took the time to understand our family’s concerns and needs during such an emotional decision.

Although our family ultimately decided not to move forward with the facility because Mom’s daughter chose to care for her at home, we cannot say enough about Ana’s professionalism, dedication, and resourcefulness. She made a very difficult process feel so much easier and less overwhelming.

The facility itself is beautiful, welcoming, and filled with very friendly residents and staff. If you are looking for guidance, support, or information about assisted living, Ana is truly the person you want by your side. She has an amazing ability to match your loved one’s unique needs with the care and services they offer.

Thank you again, Ana, for your kindness and all the support you gave our family. We are deeply grateful.

**Vernal Brown continues to threaten Google that he is taking legal action - however, nothing is pending. This is a mere threat and scare tactic to get certain negative reviews taken down. Be very cautious of a facility who tries to cover-up their wrongs.***

If you value health, safety, dignity, and basic human decency, please avoid this facility at all costs. In my experience, there is a reason it’s the cheapest place on Long Island...the care reflects it.

My family’s time here was a nightmare. Under Director Vernal Brown, I personally witnessed what felt like targeted treatment toward certain residents, including my mother, simply for questioning decisions or not showing the deference he demanded. Instead of addressing concerns, the response often felt punitive.

They even attempted to impose a $10 per-tray room-service charge despite food that was consistently cold, wrong, or barely edible. The “chef,” Russell, if you can even call him one, routinely sent out meals that my mother couldn’t eat, and room-delivery meals were frequently forgotten altogether leaving my Mom to starve unless I had food delivered to her.

Staffing was another disaster. Help, when you could get it, often took hours. Most of the staff are kind and WANT to help, but they are run around and stretched so thin that it makes their job impossible. The staff also is ever-changing, likely because of Vernal's leadership and demeaning ways. My mother was repeatedly given incorrect medication and doses at incorrect times, and some medications were simply missed. That alone should make any family run.

When I tried to escalate issues, everything hit a wall. Christine Coppola-Leone, who oversees all Arbors locations, would agree on the phone and promise to follow up — then never return calls again. The President, Karen Solomon, was completely unreachable in my experience as she had no time to speak to lowly residents or their families. No accountability, no solutions, just silence.

One of the most disturbing moments came after we reported issues. Instead of addressing concerns, the facility issued what I believe was an improper, retaliatory 30-day eviction notice to an elderly resident — effectively trying to put them out on the street. The Department of Health later stepped in and rejected the eviction as improper. The fact that this even happened is beyond alarming.

I ultimately filed a formal Department of Health complaint myself, and it resulted in multiple citations. That speaks for itself.

In my experience, this facility prioritizes money over human beings. For the safety and well-being of your loved ones, I strongly recommend staying far, far away.

**Vernal Brown continues to threaten Google that he is taking legal action - however, nothing is pending. We moved my 89 year old Mother into the Arbors the beginning of December. The staff could not have been more helpful and caring in getting her settled in. There's always an adjustment period, but she is doing great, loves the food and made a few friends already. We feel so much more comfortable knowing Mom is in a safe and vibrant environment with caring, compassionate people caring for her. She cant wait for the weather to get better. She's looking forward to the day trips. Bring on the Bingo!!
Cheryl Sullivan
