What Families Think

Reviews of Sunrise Health Services are sharply divided: many families praise long-tenured, caring staff (especially social workers and nurses) who go out of their way for residents, while a substantial number of others describe serious lapses in basic care, hygiene, and responsiveness. The facility has a long history on Milwaukee's south side and offers on-site medical oversight, but the wide spread between glowing and alarming reviews suggests inconsistent experiences from resident to resident.

The Good

  • Long-tenured, family-like staff praised by many reviewers
  • Physician, NP, or PA on-site five or more days weekly
  • Private suites available in the rehabilitation unit
  • Social workers frequently singled out for compassionate, hands-on support
  • PT/OT rehab teams praised for motivating patients' recovery
  • Dedicated activity room with regular life-enrichment programming

The Bad

  • Several reviewers report long call-light response times, from 20 minutes to hours
  • Multiple accounts of unclean rooms, soiled linens, or hygiene lapses
  • One detailed report cites a 1-star CMS health rating and repeated Medicare funding cutoffs
  • Several complaints about food quality and inconsistent dietary accommodations

My mother entered Sunrise for rehabilitation services to help her recover from a fall. My mother also has Parkinsons and Ehlers Danlos, and struggles with mental health issues from being a beautiful woman who had a hard life. As you can imagine, physical therapy was difficult, and my mother's advances were incremental and hard for her. And as you can seriously imagine, feeling safe and heard was critical to her care. All the CNA, nursing, medication, food service, housekeeping, physical therapy, laundry services, etc that are necessary for my mother's care we're given with the best possible efforts of everyone there. For example, food service gave my mom special silverware for her shaking hands. Laundry personnel and the CNA's taught me how to label my mom's clothes. There are many people working at Sunrise who have been there for awhile, to me that spoke of a decent place to work. If there's too much turnover at a place, I wouldn't feel my mother would be safe. I know there are many good people working at Sunrise; and I have not had a chance to meet all of them in-depth. Let me tell you about two stand out people who helped me, help my mother, most. I feel responsible and serious about my mother's total situation -- I knew I needed help to help her. The demystification and coordination of care from social worker Laura was pivotal. Once I was introduced to this lovely and professional person, I realized I had someone to answer all of my questions. Someone to encourage me with the difficult decision-making concerning my mother. Laura also worked hard and was upbeat about getting the durable medical equipment necessary for my mother's progression in mobility. I also appreciated Tamika from day one. I spotted this powerhouse woman with her protective and take charge attitude for the Sunrise patients, and knew she was gonna be really good. I wouldn't have known how to navigate the facility and work with the boots-on the-ground Care Team, had Tamika not explained to me how to do that. She was so matter-of-fact, I instantly felt like I could handle the hard days that I knew were coming. I also want to add that I LOVE that Sunrise encourages families to participate in their loved ones care. If my mom wants an extra hair wash during the week, I know I can come there and use the beauty room and feel like I can actually help my mother. At Sunrise I don't feel like my mother is locked away somewhere or that I can't even figure out how to help my mother. I love my mother. I appreciate and am greatful to Sunrise People working together as a community to facilitate a space so I can show my mother my love. Thank you.

This place was horrible, inadequate supervison, unclean envoirment , so many staff ,members NOT wearing name tags, couldnt identify who was nurse, doctor, therapist, cna, house keeping at times, they kept my boyfriends clothes when he was transferred i visited from 12pm til 630 pm Not one medical staff came in this day, dinner is at 5 pm my boyfriend didnt get his dinner til 630 the nurse had to even ask if he was forgotten about, i asked for clean linen, because i had to change his linens they were soild every visit, and i was directed to where they kept fresh linen and gowns, they took his blood pressure when they did take it over longsleeve shirt and jacket with a wrist cuff i didnt see it documented, respond times to call lights took forever , and they lied that they had given him his PM meds, because he complained of a headache and i informed idk somebody with no name tag, they said they would ask his nurse if he could have tylenol and ask and confirm he indeed he got his PM medds, the nurse brought in 3 pills in a medicine cup, the 1 tylenol and the 2 other pills were his PM meds, last equipment is so outdated the call light is literally a button on a string, b/p cuffs were wrist cuffs, if i cound rate this place a MINUS 1 i would

This was my second stay. The service quality was as excellent this time, as it was the first time. The staff was most professional yet friendly. All my my questions were answered. I became very ill with severe flu-like symptoms. I was given a most thorough set of attention and medication to help eliminate this problem. All in all, I will always recommend Sunrise Health Services anytime for both myself and others. It
