My Mom recently moved to Summer Commons. Her room was very clean apon move in. I found the staff warm and welcoming. They have musicians that come in during the week and at times the residents are up and dancing. Yes my Mom is one of them. Cookie baking, gardening are just some of the activities. When I arrive in the lobby I am greeted and ask if I have any questions or concerns. They always ask me how Mom is settling in too. I feel comfortable with Mom being there and that she is getting the care she needs as well as making new friends.

My great aunt is very well taken care of by a very friendly staff. A huge relief. I would recommend to anyone that needs care.

Summer Commons looks like a beautiful facility. The operations on the inside are chaotic and can not support your loved ones without your advocacy. The facility faces problems that many facilities face, but solutions are not being employed. * They often don't have enough staff. * Their staff is not highly trained in the most up-to-date evidence-based care. * Physical Therapy Services for the oldest clients equals them telling you your person plateaus and there is no more they can do. Current evidence does not support this. It instead says that the individual's rehabilitation program is insufficient to help them reach their goals (which means the therapist needs to go to the drawing board and become more educated, creative etc). Generally speaking the BPS model can fix this and is the gold standard for care. They won’t use it. Your situation will depend on your loved one's conditions, history, etc. In our case, the services are not evidence-based but instead guidelines discordant and they bully you to be ok with this. * If your loved one has hearing aids, you can plan for them to get lost more than 1x for days or weeks at a time. * Your loved one will experience preventable UTIs (unless you advocate). * The staff on the floor will be rude, dismissive, and defensive if you know your rights and advocate for them. Continue to advocate. You know your rights; most people don't. They hire emotionally immature staff and this reflects incredible poor training. Your best resource is: REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE LICENSING AND FUNCTIONING OF SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES AND NURSING FACILITIES. Read through it, know it. 1) Form a resident council to advocate for better policies and procedures throughout the facility. 2) Be active in your loved one's care planning meetings. Don't be afraid to speak up for what you see and need. The facility can not retaliate because you advocate for better, stronger, healthier care. You may get what you need if you advocate with the right people. 3) Long Term Care Ombudsman Program helps you advocate. Don't be afraid to use them if your loved one is in a Long Term Care facility (LTV) and you are not getting what you need. They are amazing and can really help make changes. Just give them a call and talk through your concerns. ( You do need to be a power of attorney). 4) This facility does not routinely test for UTIs even though they are required to help prevent them. "UTI treatment represents 30% to 50% of antibiotic use in LTC facilities." You know your loved one. ADVOCATE! You might hear, "They are expensive," or "They are just so hard to do (if your loved one is incontinent, you may hear, "They simply don't need one.” Given the statistics and how easily this can affect someone’s quality of life - advocate! We have repeatedly advocated and heard many of the thing above . Eventually, our loved one had a week-long hospitalization from an untreated, preventable UTI.. Despite this, every time we request a UTI test, we are NOT listened to. Our loved one is now in a situation where they need a hoyer lift (they can’t move on there own). There is mountains of research that show how to prevent this even in advanced age. This place doesn’t care. This company that runs this facility grosses 50+ million dollars a year. Demand better care for your loved ones.
