After reviewing every available alternative, our family chose Spring Arbor of Winchester for our mother. We have been very happy with the attention, caring staff, activities, and the community overall. It a special place, which you will notice from the minute you enter. You will most likely be greeted by friendly staff, will notice how clean it is, and its cheerful ambience. While I wish Mom was still able to live independently, I have peace of mind knowing she is enjoying a wonderful quality of life at Spring Arbor.

In preparation of downsizing our elderly parents, we researched several Assisted Living facilities in the Winchester & Front Royal area. I promised Mom and Dad that we would never place them in a facility that I myself wouldn’t be comfortable in. I knew the moment I visited Spring Arbor that it was special. It had the feel of Southern charm and hospitality. The staff and residents were happy and joyful. Spring Arbor was the perfect decision for placing our loved ones in their care. We feel very blessed.

Based on experiences over the past 18 months thru Nov 2022 and primarily the past 4 months, you should think very carefully about placing a resident here. Spring Arbor only wants residents who will not present any type of an issue from a care/daily living standpoint. When residents deteriorate and start presenting issues, their (and your) life will become extremely difficult. Good care of residents is management/ownership's third priority. The first priority is cash flow/profitability. The second priority is management covering their you know whats. My fam member resided in both assisted living and memory care. The head nurse/mgr in assisted living was sometimes too harsh and extreme but at least you can talk and work with her and overall she is fair. Don't waste your time with the mgr of memory care - my impression of her is that she can only manage by reading straight out of the owner's manual. Any issues - go straight to the Exec Director. Despite increasing rent approx $1,500 per mo fr Sept 2021 - Oct 2022 they cannot keep permanent staff. We shopped 4 different facilities in the Winchester area during Oct 2022 - all 4 were 100% staffed with permanent employees (and had been for at least 3-4 months), no temps from agencies. Spring Arbor is constantly advertising for all types of staff and I estimate that approx 50% of their staff today is supplied by temp agencies - all despite the rent increases. This would indicate to me that Spring Arbor is not a good place to work and guess who suffers....residents. Their caretakers constantly change. In memory care they stuff 2 residents in each room - max cash flow and profitability. I'll be the first to admit that my mother was not an easy resident, esp in memory care. Spring Arbor's answer was to require a 24 hour sitter (at our expense - $700/day) rather than their staff do what we're already paying them $6,900/mo for. Could have been different if adequately staffed by perm employees?? I suspect that management lied to us on at least two different things. Just prior to moving our mother to a different facility she had facial bruising that was not reported to us. Overall it is a very corporate-run facility where management's hands are tied and people apparently do not want to work. If your fam member presents no issues at all, you'll probably be happy with the place. Just be ready if/when issues arise.
