The facility was clean and I was always greeted kindly from patients and the staff I saw. However, the administration and nursing staff seem to be I'll equipped to understand behavior of a patient that has multiple strokes with brain damage causing her to have "no filter". Because of the brain damage she has no real concept of time. Instead of approaching it in a positive way she was ridiculed, told she was rude and had no manners. The nursing staff and administration should be understanding of the different physical and "mental" personalities common from strokes, brain damage and depression, they are after all working in a medical facility! The attitude when I spoke to administration was that it was the "patience" problem.

I am writing to document the substandard care and administrative negligence my husband experienced during his recent 20-day stay at Orono Commons. As his Power of Attorney and advocate, I repeatedly addressed his needs within the locked memory ward, but encountered only dismissive responses. In other words, I got a whole lot of "lip service" from everyone from the aides to the administrators. The facility’s cleanliness was unacceptable, featuring unaddressed urine spills and unsanitary bathrooms. My husband’s personal hygiene was severely neglected; he never received a full shower or shampoo and was shaved only twice while there for 3 weeks. Furthermore, his dentures and hearing aids were not maintained, resulting in one broken and one lost hearing aid, leaving him unable to hear for days. Call buttons were ignored, and basic requests, such as a working tv, were unfulfilled. The staff consistently disregarded my husband’s dignity, leaving him undressed in his room with the door open or wheeling him into common areas wearing only a gown and diaper, where everyone else was fully dressed. Additionally, staff ignored my "no visitors" instructions and then, adding insult to injury, a staff member committed a serious HIPAA violation by sharing his protected medical information with unauthorized individuals. Administrative failures were equally prevalent. Regarding his transfer, the "Discharge Coordinator" failed to assist with VA placement in a new home, forcing me to secure a new facility myself with only 2 days' notice of impending private-pay charges! Despite Unit Manager's (Susan) assurance to me that his belongings were found, saying "it's all packed up and ready to go with him in the morning!" That was rubbish. My husband arrived at his new facility in late November without a coat, shoes, or ANY of his personal property. In fact, he was wearing someone else's clothes! I had brought to Orono Commons enough clothes for 10 days, to allow for time for laundry, LL Bean slippers, hygiene items and a hearing aid tool kit. ALL of these items were "lost." Susan has since failed to return my calls - or forward his belongings to the new residence - or me. Finally, I am being erroneously billed $3,100 for care I was told Medicare fully covered; Finance (Travis) has ignored my inquiries, sending only payment plan information instead of addressing the error! The word "slovenly" comes to mind repeatedly as I write this. Slovenly in their patient care, cleanliness, slovenly HIPAA adherence, slovenly staff, giving lip service to providing help, and passing the blame to under-staffing or to the patient, himself. Slovenly managerial responses, attitudes and administration. This pervasive lack of accountability and respect for patient dignity is deeply disturbing. I am sharing this record to ensure these grievances are documented and to inform others of the conditions at your facility. LATER: I followed up with phone number they gave me, a compliance department. I gave my report, and they will bring it to the OC staff's attention. And I will update my comments IF or WHEN anything is done to resolve the outstanding issues. UPDATE: 3 months later. I did speak with the administrator, who listened to my concerns. The only area that was resolved was repayment for all of the clothing items they lost, and I am grateful for that. Nothing was settled about the other issues, as no one admit to anything they had done wrong. They just denied and deflected, and there was ultimately no accountability. My husband has been at Sedgewood Commons (a different "Genesis" facility) since then, and I have written a review for them, as well. Night and day, the difference is extraordinary.

Staff told my 85 year old grandmother, who is there for rehab after having a stroke, that ‘they weren’t playing her games’ when she asked to be repositioned during the night as she was in pain….say what?! You are here to take care of her - sorry she may need more help than others…THAT IS WHY SHE IS HERE! Very inappropriate and unacceptable.
