The position title on Debbie Tobin's business card is "Community Relations Director." My translation: she is a salesperson, which could have a negative connotation, but in this case, it absolutely does not. She is one of the nicest sales people I recall dealing with--and like most octogenarians, I've seen lots of 'em. She explained the services offered at MG-Renton and is clearly proud to represent her employer to any and all who show up. She was prepared to answer questions. I could have taken offense at the fact that she had go to get various items during our interview, but those pauses in our conversation gave me and my wife a chance to compare notes--perhaps those were intended!

I have to mention Tanya Kovtunenko. She came and sat at our table--and on learning of my poor hearing, moved to the chair next to mine. I grew up in central Massachusetts, an area heavily populated by immigrants from Poland and some other central European countries. As Tanya talked, I realized that her facial expressions and accent were SO familiar--despite the fact that I left Massachusetts in 1973--and have been back there only for vacations, and none of those for probably 20 years. Her expressive face and accent were so reminiscent of people I knew as a child that I had to hold back the tears. Perhaps there was a subconscious feeling that this is...HOME!

We felt welcomed by all those we met and sensed that MG's effort to create a community is successful--perhaps amazingly so!

Our experience with Merrill Gardens Renton has been nothing short of wonderful. The only thing that fell short was availability, which is outside of their control and a sign that they are caring for their residents who want to stay there. When availability was limited, they referred us to a sister location in Tukwila which has been working out great. Getting our deposit back was easy and prompt. I highly recommend Merrill Gardens in general, with the Renton location being a highlight among their offerings.

A very nice place to retire to. Very caring and attentive staff, and the food choices are 5 star offerings.

Just over 2 years ago I walked into Merrill Gardens - Renton, for a tour. And it happened to be on a Saturday morning which is donut-day. My reaction was a combination of happiness and sadness. Happiness at the sight of the residents lined up and teasing the person handing out the donuts (trying to finagle more donuts) and just the playful banter. The residents were engaging, happy, playful, and friendly. (With me too.) The sadness only stemmed from the thought of my mother no longer living independently.

The place was exceptionally clean and not just surface level nor was there any piped in 'smell' to masque anything. You could see and smell the cleanliness. And this was for all areas of the facility - dining, workout room, movie theatre, studio I toured, ...

There are always going to be challenges, in any relationship, and we've had a few over the 2 years. In the scheme of things they were minor. I am giving MG a 5 because every issue I've brought up has been addressed, and done so professionally.

I also want to give a major shout out to the culture Shelley has created - I am always greeted kindly and everyone always asks about my Mom. They know her by name. The front desk team is incredible. The head chef, no matter what her day is like (and I can only imagine) always has a smile and takes time to engage. The staff in the memory care unit have definitely started operating like a team under the new Director; someone is always engaging with the residents, the main living area where they spend most of their time is very clean and organized, and they often move the seating around to create nooks for those who want more solitude and quiet, and then areas to engage as well for projects or tv/movie/music time.

Knowing that mom is well cared for allows me to breathe easier. And it also allows me to be fully present with her when visiting, versus spending time on what I refer to as 'administrative or logistical' issues regarding her care.

All of the above is why I also voted for MG for Best of Renton!
