My family placed my aunt at Mermaid Manor Home for Adults on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island a couple of years ago, and it's been a really solid choice for her assisted living needs. This is a large facility (around 200 beds) right in the heart of south Brooklyn, just a short walk from the boardwalk and beach—huge plus for someone who loves the ocean air and occasional strolls to the amusement area without needing transport every time.

I would never recommend this nursing home to anyone who truly cares about their loved one. Personal belongings went missing, basic hygiene was neglected, and my family member was left with an infection that could have been prevented. Staff failed to change or properly care for residents, and concerns were repeatedly ignored. The lack of urgency, accountability, and compassion was alarming. This place feels understaffed, unorganized, and careless. Residents deserve dignity, cleanliness, and medical attention none of which were consistently provided here. If you are considering this facility, please think twice and ask hard questions. Our experience was deeply disappointing and upsetting.

Horrible facility that should be investigated by the department of aging and the department of health and mental hygiene. Disgusting conditions, residents allowed to smoke directly in front of the facility and in bathrooms, staff curse at each other, use foul language and threaten physical violence against one another. No supervision of client interactions, they are allowed to freely roam, push past each other hastily with walkers. Those with fall risk left to their own devices, and there are tile floors throughout the facility. No call buttons. Staff is shameful. Flies EVERYWHERE. Residents must share bathrooms between rooms. Really just abhorrent and will be reported shortly. 3 mo. Edit: The admin “ in charge “ malka should do the world a favor and retire from social service. She had no regard for client care, is abhorrent with condescension and WILL turn a blind eye to medical issues, staff behavior issues, and client complaints as long as she gets a paycheck every two weeks and Jewish holidays off for additional time to shirk responsibilities to clients living on site. Claims ignorance to the many issues plaguing this disgusting facility; should be removed and replaced by someone effective and capable of humanity. STAFF IS KNOWN TO DISTRIBUTE CIGARETTES TO RESIDENTS AND BE ON FACETIME INSTEAD OF SECURING FRONT DESK. BEWARE. DO NOT PLACE YOUR LOVED ONES HERE IF YOU CAN HELP IT.

The staff are very attentive to the residents needs. I was impressed as to how happy the residents were as I never get a good feel for adult homes. The rooms were clean as well as the common areas. It was so relaxing just to sit and look at the beautiful flowers in the garden while I visited my neighbor.

I have a friend's mom who lives here and she always raves about how friendly, attentive and helpful the staff are. She seems especially impressed that her mom's room and common areas are consistently clean and well-kept. A HUGE highlight is the garden (her mom loves flowers/plants) and the beach being so close by! Overall, she is extremely happy with the care her mom receives and often said she felt as though she was leaving her mom in the care of her own family. I visited recently and it lived up to the hype!! If and when the time comes for my own parents, this facility will definitely be my first choice!
