About Hilltop

Hilltop is an assisted living community in Winchester, West Virginia, serving residents who need daily support and specialized care, including dementia and memory care units.

Most families describe devoted, patient caregivers who engage warmly with residents and stay responsive to family concerns. Parents with dementia have remained there for years, and families consistently note staff professionalism and willingness to collaborate on difficult care issues. Activities are offered regularly, and one family noted staff members reach out proactively with updates without being asked. However, a meaningful minority of reviews raise serious concerns: medication management lapses (including a hospitalization after missed post-insulin monitoring), inconsistent cleanliness and hygiene standards, difficulty reaching staff by phone, and complaints about staff responsiveness during visits.

Hilltop holds a 4.0 out of 5.0 rating across 34 Google reviews, reflecting a split between families who feel their loved ones are safe and cared for with genuine warmth, and others who experienced gaps in communication, cleanliness, or medical oversight. Prospective families should weigh both the testimonials of long-term residents thriving in the community and the documented concerns about consistency in care delivery and facility management.

Top notch care! Since moving our family member to Hilltop we have seen dramatic improvement in his care. He is given attention regularly and we are kept updated regarding his status. The staff is always available to speak with--even on the weekends. Our family member has stayed healthier and happier. Hilltop provides reliable care. They have restored our peace of mind. We couldn't be more pleased.

During a recent visit (July 2025) to see a church member, I was immediately struck by a strong odor of urine in the hallways, which raises concerns about cleanliness and the level of care being provided—particularly around hygiene and timely diaper changes. Today, I attempted to call the facility five times over the span of two hours to check on the church member’s well-being and availability for a visit. Unfortunately, no one answered the phone. This lack of responsiveness, combined with the concerning environment, reflects very poorly on the facility’s management. Based on this experience, I would not feel comfortable placing a loved one in their care.

*****Updated April 27, 2025*****
My mom has lived in this home for two years since April 2023. I call it a home, not a facility because the Hilltop family of residents is cared for with love and devotion. The caregivers work tirelessly to address every individual's needs.
The team and their leaders make the difference. I would love to give shout-outs, but I can't because there are too many, and I wouldn't want to leave anyone out. I can tell you some things that have been said to me in my near recent recollection: "Be safe," as I leave for my car; "Anything for the residents," as I admired a kitchen associate sweetly assisting a resident in the living room with some food. I can also tell you things I have experienced. I have seen my mom receive countless hugs and kisses from her family of caregivers. Her caregivers gave her handmade jewelry, chocolate candy canes for her hot chocolate, which they know she drinks daily, and visits from their children. The warmth, compassion, and good vibes are plentiful.
Thank you to the Hilltop team for everything you do and for making a difference. Your work is a gift.
We are very grateful to call Hilltop our home, and I wish I could give you 10 stars!
**********

When I walk in the door of the beautiful Hilltop home in Winchester, Virginia, I feel the love in the air, in the easy smiles and eye contact of the warm-hearted Hilltop family who is comprised of residents who are cared for and respected and by the team, who relate to the residents and families as their family.
The team has a culture of kindness, respect, and compassion. The team is sweet, kind, funny, generous, and honest, intending to help the residents in any way they can.
The residents are safe, secure, respected, and cared for by the exceptional team of caring and talented professionals who, although they are highly qualified caregivers, make you feel like they are your family here to help and support you holistically.
Thank you to the entire team for making this loving place possible through your tireless and selfless good work and devotion to the residents and families of the Hilltop Community. I can rest easy knowing my mom is being cared for by our Hilltop family.
If you are considering the Winchester Hilltop Community for your loved one, please do not hesitate to contact me directly to learn more about my family's experience.
