About Hawthorne Center for Rehabilitation and Healing of Sarasota

Hawthorne Center for Rehabilitation and Healing of Sarasota is a skilled nursing and long-term care facility in Sarasota, Florida, with a licensed capacity of 120 residents.

Families consistently praise the cleanliness of the building and the training and responsiveness of day staff, particularly physical therapy and nursing teams. One family wrote, "these guys really did it for him," crediting therapists with helping a patient regain strength after hospitalization. The facility offers daily activities and maintains a clean environment free of odors. However, some families note concerns: night shift care quality appears inconsistent, with one account of a patient being discouraged from mobility during evening hours; food service receives mixed marks, with complaints about cold breakfast items and occasional meal discrepancies; and maintenance responsiveness on weekends has been questioned.

Families should be aware of the nurse-to-patient ratio of approximately 1:20, which can affect responsiveness during peak times. The facility holds a 4.3-star Google rating across 77 reviews, reflecting generally positive experiences tempered by operational inconsistencies.

A great experience here for my client John Fleming. After a short stay in the hospital he came here to get back in shape and these guys really did it for him. Special thanks to Julie in physical therapy and Jackie the nurse for keeping him going and getting him what he needs. A big special thanks to Ryan and the nice young lady at the front desk going above and beyond for John when he was leaving the facility. Great job guys and thank you again.

I had anticipated that this would be a highly recommended establishment, but I was quite displeased to observe the nurses using their phones. The furniture is not being repaired over the weekend, and we must wait until Monday. The air conditioner is emitting an unusual noise, and we are informed that we must also wait until a weekday for it to be serviced or inspected. This has been a very disappointing stay for my mother-in-law.

Hawthorne is neat and clean. The nurses and aids have been very helpful. I am a little disappointed with the food service, my wife says the eggs at breakfast are always cold or lukewarm. Also v sometimes what is in her sheet which comes with the meal is not always correct as to what she receives. Overall I am pleased with Hawthorne and its service . This is our first experience with a rehab facility.

My 89 year old father with Parkinson's was sent there to rehab after several days in the emergency room. The day staff is very helpful as well as the therapy. I will say that please be careful with the night staff. My father was taunted because he was mobile and was in his room. They insisted that he lay in bed at night. He can basically stand and shuffle walk. They got upset because he was out of bed so the striped him naked and told him he better stay in bed and threatened him. He was upset at this treatment so he tired to slowly leave. They called me and said he was being combative and had to go to the emergency room for a mental evaluation. We were on our way but they sent him anyway at 10PM. When we arrived to the emergency room they asked how he could have sprinted to the door. (Reported from Hawthorne staff) and was this his normal demeanor. Calm and articulate. He was sent back. My brother spent the night to protect him from retaliation. We spoke to his independent living home so he could go back for care. When he was released one of the day staff said they had been having real issues with night staff taunting the residents. This is NOT how our aging loved ones should be cared for. Thank god he has lots of family local. Who knows what would have happened. This is a nursing home at night. Stay in bed and do as you are told. I have spoken to staff and hope this helps.

I visited my father here for the past two days. All staff members I have met are well trained, courteous, and responsive. The ratio of nurse to patient is about 1:20, so this should be kept in mind when a patient has needs. The building itself is extremely clean and completely void of any odors. Daily activity sheets are handed out to the patients and the events my father participated in were well attended. He made a few friends here and was happy once he got settled in. He was indeed in good hands here at Hawthorne. Cell phone coverage was mainly available nearer windows, and by nearer windows, I basically mean either at the window or in the outside (and very pleasant) veranda. The rooms allow for personal touches to be added. Bring a chair though if you plan to stay in the room for a length of time.
