My grandfather was admitted to Hamilton Arms Center for short-term rehabilitation after being discharged from the hospital, and our family’s experience was extremely disappointing. The first night alone raised several serious concerns. My grandfather was not given his CPAP machine overnight despite having sleep apnea. He also did not receive his regular home medications. By the following morning, his mental status had noticeably deteriorated compared to when he arrived. When I visited at approximately 10:30 a.m., he was still not dressed. He was lying partially out of bed wearing only a diaper, complaining of significant back and buttock pain because he had not been repositioned or helped to move. For someone who is elderly, has dementia, and is a high fall risk, this level of care is unacceptable. The nursing staff was also concerning. The head nurse (initials Z.R., red curly hair) was passive-aggressive and rude during our interactions. Rather than explaining the admission paperwork or answering questions, she simply told me I had filled things out incorrectly without offering any helpful guidance and proceeded to argue with me that I was wrong. My grandfather also used his call bell to ask for assistance getting to the bathroom, and it took approximately 15–20 minutes for someone to respond. Given that he is a documented fall risk with dementia and multiple medical conditions, delays like this could have resulted in a serious injury. Our family trusted Hamilton Arms Center to provide safe, compassionate rehabilitation care. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we left with significant concerns about the quality of care, communication, and attention given to vulnerable patients. I hope management takes these concerns seriously so that other families do not have a similar experience. We will be contacting the PA Department of Health and the Office of Aging.
