About Good Shepherd Health Center

Good Shepherd Health Center is a skilled nursing and long-term care facility in Mason City, Iowa, licensed for 180 residents.

Families report mixed experiences with the nursing and care practices. Some appreciated the move-in support and individual staff members who went out of their way to help—one family noted that a social worker "went above and beyond to make sure that all our needs were met quickly and efficiently." However, multiple families raised concerns about responsiveness: long wait times to speak with staff, delayed basic care like bathing, and difficulty getting return calls during the admissions process. These gaps appear to frustrate families most when they conflict with expectations around care quality and communication.

The facility is a VA-affiliated option in the area. It holds a 3.7 out of 5 Google rating based on 29 reviews, reflecting the divided feedback about care consistency and family support.

Applied before Thanksgiving and talked to Belle and gave them all the paperwork. Since then we have been calling every few weeks leaving messages and they wont return calls.horrible professionalism and wouldn't recommend it at all.

My experience with good Sheppard has always been from a different perspective. They support of local emergency team by providing space on one of their buildings for a radio antenna that is used during emergencies. Every time I call the staff is always very helpful and the maintenance goes out of their way to make sure we are taken are of. This ultimately helps to keep the entire Community safe!

not impressed with the care. My dad’s mom was at good shepherd for over 3 years and questionable care had happened then. We refused to take my mom’s dad here but it’s the only place that works with the VA. I am aware there is a lot going on but I expected more from the nursing staff to try and help accommodate families. We called and waited 45 minutes to talk to my grandfather - turns out they shredded the number. not impressed.

If you're planning on doing skilled nursing here.....they will keep you way past the time you need to be here! They are are abusing Medicare for skilled nursing? Don't plan on getting a shower either! Mother finally received one after 10 days. Not until we had found out and brought it to their attention! Won't ever get my mother to come back here again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently moved a family member into Good Shepherd from Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living and was extremely impressed with the seamless transition. Little did I know that furniture and personal items would be moved for us at no fee! That was priceless. Also, Social Worker Kiley Logan went above and beyond to make sure that all our needs were met quickly and efficiently! Many thanks.
