About Family Initiatives Residences

Family Initiative Residences is a personal care home and independent apartment community in Conyers, Georgia, serving individuals with mental illness. The organization operates a 16-bed personal care home and 22-unit independent apartments on its campus in historic downtown Conyers.

Founded in 1985 by members of the Georgia Alliance For The Mentally Ill (now NAMI Georgia), FIR was established to provide a stable home environment for mentally ill family members. The organization opened its first personal care home in Decatur in April 1986, followed by another location in Stone Mountain in October 1987, before relocating its campus to Conyers in 2006.

The community's approach focuses on developing self-reliance through specific lifestyle guidance. Staff and residents work together to teach living skills, provide emotional support, and encourage personal growth. Rather than serving as housing alone, FIR aims to give residents an alternative to institutional settings and the streets, enabling them to experience and live life despite their illness.

AC broke 2 times in 2 weeks during summer when it was 100 degrees, staff rude and unfriendly and has no business dealing with the mentally ill.i have a learning disability and the staff has openly swore at me for god knows what. It’s an assisted living facility so there are many people here that have various disabilities, but the staff don’t seem to care. They will quite literally yell you down for the slightest infractions. Internet very poor here, they say on the site it is "hotel quality" which is ironic because hotels have some of the worst internet around. food very hit and miss sometimes good sometimes poor but never enough of it. Staff can move you into more expensive rooms at will so there's no price guarantee. I was in a 3600$ per month room and inexplicably and suddenly got moved to a 4500$ per month room. overall very poor experience here, don't bother if your a gamer either because of the internet you can forget about playing call of duty or your other favorite games. There are also other rules like no talking at night and there's a curfew from 11pm to 6am so you cant get any food or do anything between those times. One time i was being interviewed by a Japanese company so the interview was at night and staff barged in and told me to go to bed ruining the interview. Another thing, heating and cooling way to low especially in the main building which ironically is more expensive. It’s way to hot in summer and way way to cold in winter. As I’m writing this in winter I’m currently bundled up in 2 sweaters just to stave off the cold in this building. Another thing, the woman who runs this building has been described by multiple people who live here as “intimidating” I don’t know about you but if I were running an assisted living facility the last thing I would want to be called is “intimidating”. Also, in the main building there is a serious issue with the plumbing. I have smelt some of the foulest smells in the hallways in the main building and the worst part of all of this is the staff doesn't do anything to address any of these issues.

The staff is incredibly unhelpful and rude. The owner in particular exhibits terrible qualities for an owner of an assisted living facility: they are extremely unprofessional, icy, and intimidating. Although it states on the website that "members and staff work together to teach our residents living skills, provide emotional support, encourage independence, and improve self-esteem," the way the company is operated and the way employees treat the residents promote the opposite of what the company claims.
