About Dunklau Gardens

Dunklau Gardens is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in Fremont, Nebraska, offering 24-hour nursing care in a comfortable, home-like setting. The community is located on a campus close to family and friends, and provides 106 beds for residents in need of skilled care, including a 24-bed short-term rehabilitation unit and four large hospice suites.

Care is delivered by a staff of more than 100, including nursing, therapy, social work and clinical support professionals. Staff members receive dementia and behavioral certification, and the team is equipped to handle a range of complex care situations while pursuing ongoing education and training.

The facility has a long history in the Fremont community, originally opening in 1960 as a 120-bed skilled care unit. It was named A.J. Merrick Manor in 1963 in honor of a local physician, and 46 private rooms were added in 1991 for skilled nursing care.

In the mid-2010s, the Building a Healthy Future project renovated the facility to create a more home-like experience, adding private rooms, enlarging private rooms and bathrooms, enhancing privacy in companion rooms, and creating new courtyard and community spaces. The facility was renamed Dunklau Gardens in recognition of a gift from the Rupert Dunklau Foundation and Rupert Dunklau's community leadership, and the renovated short-term rehabilitation unit was rededicated as the A.J. Merrick Rehabilitation unit.

Dunklau Gardens aims to ensure each resident feels at home and receives individualized, compassionate care, whether they are long-term residents or staying for short-term rehabilitation.

Dunklau had some very considerate and kind aides and we're clean. However the nursing staff was inconsiderate, rude, and harmful. One nurse rudely explained that she would not let my husband sit in his chair because the chair alarm went off one time. He had a persistent nose bleed that was passed off as his gums bleeding from dentures. Nurse said he couldn't use his dentures. He had blood building up in his body which caused him to be difficult to wake up. Nurse did not check on him, and did not give medication as ordered. He should have been sent to emergency room.

My Dad was admitted into hospice at Dunklau, the care was wonderful for my dad and even family. They explained everything. Staff turned him often, meds were given on time, he was kept clean and dry. I can't say enough, Thank you for the care and compassion he received. LaRue

My mother had a stroke and I chose this facility because of their good ratings. The staff is great, helpful and knowledgeable. They are very thorough and keep me informed almost daily of how my mother is doing. The therapist’s are great and mom is improving greatly!

I would not send my parent there again for rehab. She had hip surgery and for a month was dragging her foot. She had a dropped foot after surgery and no-one caught the problem until a family member said she needed a brace. A wasted month and then they still didn't get the brace for another week. She was given a few days with the brace and we were told she would be in a wheel chair because of dementia. A total disaster and no help except blame dementia. It was the dropped foot they didn't catch and then blamed it on her unwillingness to walk having to drag a foot that had lost nerves.

No one answered when I called today. I called several times, and nobody ever answered the phone.
