What Families Think

Families describe two very different experiences under one roof: the independent living side, known as the Atrium, gets warm praise for its small, friendly community and attentive staff, while the skilled nursing/rehab side draws frequent and serious complaints about cleanliness, staffing, and basic care. Physical and occupational therapy are repeatedly singled out as strong points across both sides, but many reviewers describe unanswered call bells, medication issues, and inconsistent staff professionalism in the nursing wing.

The Good

 • Atrium independent living praised as friendly, small, close-knit community
 • Physical and occupational therapy staff repeatedly praised by rehab patients
 • Several named staff (Sydney, Tiya, Katie, Shelly) called caring and attentive

 • Activities like bingo, music, and outings enjoyed by residents

 • Several reviewers described dirty conditions and strong odors in the nursing area
 • Several reports of medication errors or missed/late doses
 • Several reviewers noted understaffing and frequent management turnover

About Churchman Village

Churchman Village in Newark, Delaware, offers Independent Living and Skilled Nursing/Long Term Care in two distinct settings: the Atrium (a smaller independent community of about 40 residents) and a broader skilled nursing facility. The facility serves seniors across a range of care needs, from those downsizing after years living alone to patients requiring rehabilitation and ongoing medical support.

Family experiences vary sharply. Many who describe the Atrium specifically highlight a warm, intimate environment where staff create a welcoming atmosphere and residents form genuine friendships. Several families praise individual staff members by name for their consistency and care, and note that residents have grown socially engaged and content. However, families with rehabilitation and skilled nursing experiences report serious concerns: inconsistent communication during stays, staffing shortages that lead to slow response times, lapses in cleanliness and hygiene standards, and instances where medical needs, medication administration, vital sign monitoring, equipment maintenance, were not properly addressed. One family noted that staff shortages mean each member "work[s] very hard," yet coverage gaps have resulted in residents falling and waiting extended periods for assistance.

The rating reflects this divide. Churchman Village holds 3.1 out of 5 stars across 69 reviews, with strong praise concentrated among independent-living residents and serious complaints centered on skilled nursing and rehabilitation care. Prospective residents should clarify which setting they are considering and speak directly with current families in that specific program before deciding.

Things must have changed they’ve gone completely downhill. My mother had to sign herself out from there. They had her in a broken bed. They gave her the wrong medication and everyone there was unprofessional with a nasty attitude who wants their mother going through something like that. Terrible absolutely terrible. She had to sign herself out would not recommend it to anyone. 🤬

They sent my mother in law home and she died that night. They kept arguing with my husband about her needing care.

Do not send your family here. My grandparents were stolen from and lied to back in early 2000s and they died there. Now my father is being released and they don't have a clue how to even communicate his release. It would be better to let them pass away at home with some dignity then dying in that hell hole

My grandparents moved into the Atrium last year. They had been looking to downsize and find somewhere they could live without all of the upkeep. Their problem had been that places in the area were either out of their budget or not up to their standards. Finding the Atrium was a blessing! They could afford it, stay close to the community they have so many ties to, and not sacrifice their standards. I have been to visit with my three young children, and everyone there, staff and residents, were very friendly and welcoming. It has been the ideal option for them to maintain a level of independence while greatly reducing the workload that typically comes with it.

Update: my grandmother is still very happy with the friendliness and attention of the staff. However, management isn’t upkeeping the facility at our expected level. For example, the elevator has been having issues and doesn’t work consistently. Being on the second floor using a walker, this has created a lot of issues for her. We are hoping things will improve.
