My mother moved into Brookdale several months ago. The staff are excellent, and I would highly recommend Brookdale. Our first contact was with Haley, who gave us a tour and patiently answered all my questions. She kindly arranged for my mother to attend several activities. This was a great help, so that when my mother moved in later, she had already met some of the other residents and was a little familiar with the building. Erica organizes the activities at Brookdale, and she does an amazing job. The activities are tailored to the interests and abilities of the residents. There is no pressure to join in, but if you want to, there is always lots to do. If my mother doesn’t show up for an activity that she usually attends, Erica notices her absence and will go knock on her door to see if she would like to come. The residents love Erica and she truly seems to care about them too. Any time I visit, the residents all seem to be happy. Most of them use walkers, and you might think they couldn’t do very much, but they have art classes, book club, live music entertainment, Friday happy hour, chair exercise classes, restaurant outings, bingo and other games, culinary club, and more. I once showed up when they were playing Wii Bowling. As each resident took their turn, Erica reminded them to lock the wheels on their walker and hold it with one hand while they bowled. The other residents would clap and cheer as each person took their turn. John is another employee who clearly cares about the residents. When he sees a way to be helpful, he steps right up before you even ask. When he saw my mother having a little trouble getting out of a rocking chair, he was immediately by her side to assist. When my mother goes upstairs to play games with her friends in the evening, she occasionally turns the wrong way off the elevator, but John is familiar with her routine and kindly takes her in the right direction. When he noticed us looking in the puzzle cabinet for a jigsaw puzzle to do together, he not only told us that there was another puzzle cabinet a bit further down the hallway, but he also returned a few moments later with a puzzle for us. John is always kind and patient and helpful, a real treasure. I could go on and on. Wanda, the concierge at the front desk, is unfailingly helpful. The chef is excellent, and my mother always enjoys her meals. Even the young man who came to empty the trash one day was very thoughtful – he had not seen my mother in the dining room at lunch time and checked to make sure that she had eaten lunch. My mother didn’t really want to move away from her house and into assisted living, but once she moved in she soon started having fun and said that she didn’t want to leave. She feels safe and happy there, and I know that she is well cared for. A big thank you to everyone at Brookdale!
